NDX and NAC 282 System automation
Posted by: reAnimate on 25 April 2018
I've a 12 year old 282 paired with an NDX. I have been reading about system automation which would enable me to control the volume of the 282 from the iPad application.
I see the 3.5 jack remote out socket on the NDX, but the closest I can find on the 282 is a "Control RC5 in" phono socket.
Are they the correct ports? If so I need a jack > phono lead.
Thanks.
Yes, that's right.
From the NDX manual -
To take advantage of System Automation, connect one of the NDX/5XS rear panel Remote Out sockets to a preamplifier, CD player or DAC Remote In socket. Use a cable terminated with a 3.5mm jack plug at one end and a 3.5mm jack or phono plug as necessary at the other end.
Yes, an RCA to 3.5mm jack is all you need, they are very cheap and you should be able to find a choice of lengths to keep the cable dressing under control.
Thanks so much.

All up and running, thanks again.

Yip that's what gave me the idea in the first place.
I have just managed to get the NDX to talk to my 282. The cable is RCA at one end and mini jack at the other. Contrary to what the page says, "...3.5mm to RCA (mono preferred but if you use a stereo only 1 channel will work, normally the right channel)..." it is actually the left channel that you have to use.
You also have to enable the volume control in the Naim App. It doesn't automatically pick up that the NDX is configured to use Automation.
I have one last problem that has me stumped. If I listen to the radio in the NDX and then switch to the TIDAL function the moment that I start to play music, the input selection on the pre amp jumps to the right hand side "Aux1" after about 1/2 second of music. Then I have to dig out the pre amp remote and move it back to CD where I have my NDX plugged in. The whole idea was to be able to control the system from the iPad app but I keep having to use the remote.
Does anyone know how to stop the 282 from jumping from "CD" to "Aux1" every time I change in the input selection on the NDX remote control?
I feel not know the answer to this but can you not turn off the Aux 1 input in the 282, which might frustrate it into staying on CD?

I think that Section 14.1 (Automatic Input Switching) of the Preamp manual details how to program which inputs will be available for automatic switching.
Looking at the rear of the NDX2 in recent pictures would indicate that this feature of controlling a Naim pre-amp has been dropped. Happy to be corrected on that?

The NDX2 has an IR Out.

Jack,
I think by default, the 282 and NDX are set up to expect that the NDX is connected to AUX1, which is how mine is set up via the nDAC. If you prefer a different configuration, like CD instead, this can be set on the NDX in System Automation. Hint: look at what the NDX wants to do if you had a CD player connected to CD on the 282.
I had to modify it slightly for other sources plugged into the DAC, which all need AUX1.
I do not recall the details, but I hope knowing it is there helps you find it.
