Dipping toes into the NAS (world) with no clue and getting rid of the CD player
Posted by: Stephen Tate on 25 April 2018
Hi folks,
please forgive me for my lack of knowledge, I don't frequent here much because I don't really understand the computer world that much to be completely honest. I do find it daunting.
At the moment, as far as this streaming malarkey goes, I just subscribe to qobuz via my PC laptop via a Jitterbug and into a USB DAC. I'm toying with the idea (in my day dream world probably) to buy a Network Attached Storage device to replace my CD player.
I need advice as I'm not computer literate by any stretch of the imagination and I can't quite afford a Naim solution at this moment in time, I wish I could have a Naim but I can't, other pressing priorities are dictating right now.
I have looked at a Qnap device on Amazon, do I just get one, plug it in and then go from there? as I say, i'm out of my depth here with any confidence or knowledge. I will have around £1000 to play with to replace my CD5si into Nait 5si with Neat motive SX2 speakers . Are there other options to look at that are better? I've only picked bits here and there from other threads, put two & two together and probably come up aready with five.
Top sound quality with what I've got is what i'm after. I just use a basic PlusNet servive provider via a landline, no switch or anything like that. I only have a smart TV connected via a Ethernet cable and that's about it.
Qobuz is streamed wirelessly and runs faultlessly via my laptop but...
Thankyou kindly advance guys for any guidance and info that maybe offered.

Oh I will Huge, thanks.
Hi folks,
I have been ripping CDs into my laptop via dBpoweramp and I have noticed that some tracks have a red border around them with a AR X; on the end written in green it says 'secure'. Can anyone here tell me whether or not the tracks have been ripped or have they just been cancelled and ignored?
I'm not sure what to do, I have checked the offending CDs and all appears to be ok, even so I do clean them with some IPA and try again with a re-write but still no luck.
Is there something else I can do?
Thanks for any help.

You’re cleaning them with BEER! What a waste

It means the rip had no detectable errors, but this time the CD is not present in AccurateRip's database.

Isopropyl alcohol very lightly dabbed with a lint free cloth - it's never caused me any problems over the years. I suppose if I did use beer then I agree with you, what a waste of beer!

I assume to do with accurate rip, though whether that means it simply hasn’t found the track in AR, or that it did but the rip doesn’t tally I don’t know - I’m sure that dB will tell you somewhere, in the help, maybe online? What ripping options are you using?
If that is all you can achieve, you could look where the rip is saved you’ll see if the tracks exist, and whether the filesize appears about right for the track length. If seems OK you could try playing to assess.

Sorry, rubbish joke - I knew perfectly well what you meant!

Hi Frank,
so if I understand you correctly, the offending track has still ripped ok?

I hope so, you can confirm by playing it? Does it sound OK as expected?
I suspect the CD is probably rare?

Thanks IB, i'll have a look.
I'm still not quite used to it yet. I've just been putting discs in and walking away.
I'm using the secure setting on level 5 (recommended)?

Yes. Funny enough it does seem to tally up with rare compilation discs!

I meant the bit in the drop down (can’t recall exactly what called, but ttere were notes somewhere earlier in the thread: to do with how quickly/thoroughly it reads, and to do with the accurate rip check.
If the problem is simply that AR doesn’t have thectrack, don’t worry about it - I had a few that AR didnt know. But if it is not accurate, then a slower more thorough read might be worth trying.
For instance; inside a red box it says - Re-rip [114 frames] ?

I've got you - lossless encoding - uncompressed?
Stephen Tate posted:For instance; inside a red box it says - Re-rip [114 frames] ?
That usually means the CD is dirty, a few swipes could fix it.

Many thanks Frank!
I would suggest the rip options as WAV (as source), no compress.

Hi Frank,
Please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
Is WAVE the same as WAV?
Yes, it’s the same. But don’t worry, keep ripping to flac.

Ok, thanks Nigel.
Much appreciated!

or possibly that there is a physical flaw on the CD that prevents your CD player from reading the track with the absolute accuracy that a dbPoweramp 'secure rip' requires .
If cleaning the disc doesn't work and you still get the ripping error, then I would change the 'ripping method' from 'secure' to 'burst - no error recovery' in the top options menu, and re-rip the disc (or the specific track that encountered the problem).
Most of the time this will result in a successful rip, and the underlying data error (wherever it is) will be completely inaudible whenever you play the ripped track on your system.
Remember to switch the ripping method back to 'secure' in preparation for the next CD rip.
Thank you so much Hmack!
It worked.

Yep.
Naim/Linn streamers work best with WAV, you can rip to FLAC but later you will probably need to convert to WAV on the fly for the best result for streaming,

No. See quite long my post at 11.06 on 29/4 near the bottom of the second page of this thread (assuming pages have the same length for everyone)
re flac or wav, that is irrelevant to ripping ease or accuracy (and should you ever decide you want them all in the other format, dBPoweramp can batch convert)

Nearly all the CDs I’ve ripped are used, and I just shove them into the drive and let it get on with the job. They rarely, if ever, fail to rip properly. Perhaps dbPoweramp is fussier than others, or maybe your CD drive is a bit iffy - perhaps you could try a different one just to check.
