Dipping toes into the NAS (world) with no clue and getting rid of the CD player
Posted by: Stephen Tate on 25 April 2018
Hi folks,
please forgive me for my lack of knowledge, I don't frequent here much because I don't really understand the computer world that much to be completely honest. I do find it daunting.
At the moment, as far as this streaming malarkey goes, I just subscribe to qobuz via my PC laptop via a Jitterbug and into a USB DAC. I'm toying with the idea (in my day dream world probably) to buy a Network Attached Storage device to replace my CD player.
I need advice as I'm not computer literate by any stretch of the imagination and I can't quite afford a Naim solution at this moment in time, I wish I could have a Naim but I can't, other pressing priorities are dictating right now.
I have looked at a Qnap device on Amazon, do I just get one, plug it in and then go from there? as I say, i'm out of my depth here with any confidence or knowledge. I will have around £1000 to play with to replace my CD5si into Nait 5si with Neat motive SX2 speakers . Are there other options to look at that are better? I've only picked bits here and there from other threads, put two & two together and probably come up aready with five.
Top sound quality with what I've got is what i'm after. I just use a basic PlusNet servive provider via a landline, no switch or anything like that. I only have a smart TV connected via a Ethernet cable and that's about it.
Qobuz is streamed wirelessly and runs faultlessly via my laptop but...
Thankyou kindly advance guys for any guidance and info that maybe offered.
On a different note :
I have just purchased a Hi-Res download from Qobuz which cost me £14.49. Downloaded it but I can't find it on my laptop anywhere.
Even downloading an album seems a ball ache. I'm £14.49 worse off with nothing to show for it.

Just curious: you have this same trouble with other things you do on a computer?

You just need to go to your Qobuz My Account/My Music/Access Download and download the file again, this time make a note of where the file is being stored on your PC/laptop. By default it's normally the Downloads folder.

Just to mess with Stephen's brain a bit, I was all set to go for the 272/200 recently. The dealer also had a 2nd hand 250 at a good price, but that nudged me to check out the current 250DR so we added that to the audition. It was genuinely a big difference, ending on the DR. The word on the street when I delved in to it was that the 200 is ok, but the step up to the next level with a 250DR is a big leap. IME it is.
Go on Stephen, fill your boots. 272 / 250DR. If you go for the 200 you'll just spend the next few years wishing you'd aimed higher anyway, so you may as well save yourself the cost of buying a 200 then buying the one you really want.
Steady on, before you know it we’ll be talking him into buying a full 500 system at this rate! Besides, my priority would be adding a PSU to the 272 first.

I’m sure it will be there somewhere, don’t worry, it’s not just you. I’ve found downloading from Qobuz to be a very hit and miss process in the past.

Hi Dave,
I cant find it on Qobuz either. They have taken the money because I've just seen the deduction on my online banking. If I go into my account it just gives me options to modify my subscription payments.
It did download because I watched it but I cant see it anywhere.

Ah, found it on Qobuz. Sorry, i'm a little cranky this morning.
I'll try and down load it again, i'll report back.
Cheers folks.

No, everything else I find easy. From internet banking to sending e-mails, to ripping CDs using dBpoweramp but ever since I've dipped my toes it's become hard work.
Ok, I have manged to do what DAVE4JAZZ suggested above only this time I chose the file to go onto my desktop, where I can easily see it. I think I know how to transfer it to the Qnap using 'right' click, I will give it a go and see if I succeed.
Thanks
WOW!
I did it, I've managed to download my purchased Hi-Res file and send it to the Qnap.
I need a cup of tea...
Hi all,
Listening to my first ever Hi-Res version download of Herbie Hancock - Man-Child.
The foot is tapping like never before!!
Excellent news.
Streaming it is then?

Yep it sure is. I think I have now gone past that point of return. I can't wait to get a Naim streamer and to really build up my music collection!
I'm just sitting here listening to my first ever Hi-Res download and guitarist Wah Wah Watson has never sounded so funky!!

I would suggest something a tad stronger ??

Well that would nice Chris and it would certainly be a system way past my wildest of dreams and pocket for that matter. As it stands, i'm leaning towards a ex-dem NDX but something is tugging my heart strings to wait for the ND5 XS 2. I have it on good research (reading reviews) that this new range of streamers are a big improvement on their predecessors and knowing Naim I believe this to be true. As far as i'm concerned Naim have never updated their hardware without very good 'sound' reasons for doing so. I'm not saying that a ND5 XS 2 is probably as good as a NDX but there does tend to be an air of excitement around when Naim release a new range and I can't help feeling that it maybe worth waiting for.
I'll know for sure when I find the time to re-visit my friendly audio T retailer.
Thanks
Just off to purchase another Hi-Res download.
I can't help but think that patience will be rewarded. In the bigger picture a 6-month wait (might be shorter!) is not that long. Be strong and stick with your original plan! :-)

100% agree! man child is one of my favorite albums, with secrets and headhunters. We seem to have similar tastes( curtis, herbie...). George Duke debut 70’s albums, stanley clarke....
But i must say it sounds better on a turntable for me. However some hirez are stunning , like jeff beck blow by blow.

I think you're right here Timo. I'm still going to visit my dealer (just out of interest) and hear a NDX against a ND5 XS just to get some sort of bearing, of course i'd rather be taking home a ND5 XS 2 all the same. On the other hand if my dealer can offer me a very good price on a ex-dem NDX then who knows, it may even depend on how eager they're in getting rid of their old stock too. Either way, I can't wait to have a Naim streamer in my system and hopefully enjoy a higher level of musical replay.
I have just downloaded a Marvin Gaye album - What's Going On - 24bit/192kHz - definitely better than the Qobuz stream in FLAC even from the lappy.
Thanks
Great news Stephen, your first taste of hi res streaming. You've got the bug now.
I have been confounded in the past with downloads and streaming. But you learn as you go and you will become more proficient. Just keep calm and patient and if all else fails turn to someone in the know.
Either go for a pre loved NDX or wait for the ND5 XS2, either route will give you a fine streaming platform. Just depends on how patient you can remain! BTW, I used my NDX for several years bare and didn't feel the need to add a power supply.

Thanks for kind words Nigel
Yes, I think I have now caught the bug even though I have only done two Hi-res downloads so far. It even feels good to be contributing something back to the music industry, like buying an album for once and knowing it's yours to keep. It might sound strange but I miss going out and buying albums, it's not something I do much these days but it certainly feels like progression, if you know what I mean. I'm now starting to feel ever so glad I never threw the towel in as I might of done a couple of weeks back. Anyway, onwards & upwards as they say!
Many thanks all!
Stephen, I hope I am not stating the obvious here but ripped CDs have a valuable place in any home streaming system library. It will be very costly and limiting if you just rely on Hi res downloads to build your streaming library. Also, just because an album is so called Hi res and comes from a supplier like Qobuz, is no guarantee of high quality sound. If the original recording was poorly produced/mastered/mixed, then the 'hi res' version will be naff too. Many hi res downloads are of course wonderful, but often at a price.
Most of my streaming library comes from ripped CDs, many bought pre loved from the river. You can get hold of most of your old favourites and new interesting artists on CD, pre-loved often for very little money. Rip them, stream them and prepare to be amazed!
Just a thought.
If you fancy real shopping you will find that your local charity shops have plenty of cd's for sale.
It's a great way of discovering new music (to yourself) as they're probably priced around a £1.
Doesn't really matter then if you aren't keen once you've ripped it (there's always the delete option) and you can donate it back on your next visit.
If you do like it everyones a winner.

That makes perfect sense to me Nigel. I'm just merely toying around with the downloading thing as it's all new to me at the minute. I have looked at some of the prices at all this Hi-Res stuff too, some of an absolute rip off I feel! Don't get wrong, I will still be mostly buying CDs albeit second hand. The other day I bought 4 albums on CD in a second store in good condition for less than a fiver!! Not only that, I have purchased dBpoweramp and now have a 3TB NAS device to fill and back up.
I have been mostly been streaming from Qobuz of late and my fire has sort of gone out with my CD player because it jumps towards the end of discs, it's on it's second mech already and i I need to send it off to be looked at before I move it on. I'm too wrapped up with this streaming malarkey at the moment to even care. Ironically, those 4 second hand CDs I purchased just recently were for the NAS and not the CD player.
Thanks for the heads up!
