Dipping toes into the NAS (world) with no clue and getting rid of the CD player
Posted by: Stephen Tate on 25 April 2018
Hi folks,
please forgive me for my lack of knowledge, I don't frequent here much because I don't really understand the computer world that much to be completely honest. I do find it daunting.
At the moment, as far as this streaming malarkey goes, I just subscribe to qobuz via my PC laptop via a Jitterbug and into a USB DAC. I'm toying with the idea (in my day dream world probably) to buy a Network Attached Storage device to replace my CD player.
I need advice as I'm not computer literate by any stretch of the imagination and I can't quite afford a Naim solution at this moment in time, I wish I could have a Naim but I can't, other pressing priorities are dictating right now.
I have looked at a Qnap device on Amazon, do I just get one, plug it in and then go from there? as I say, i'm out of my depth here with any confidence or knowledge. I will have around £1000 to play with to replace my CD5si into Nait 5si with Neat motive SX2 speakers . Are there other options to look at that are better? I've only picked bits here and there from other threads, put two & two together and probably come up aready with five.
Top sound quality with what I've got is what i'm after. I just use a basic PlusNet servive provider via a landline, no switch or anything like that. I only have a smart TV connected via a Ethernet cable and that's about it.
Qobuz is streamed wirelessly and runs faultlessly via my laptop but...
Thankyou kindly advance guys for any guidance and info that maybe offered.

It's a great way of discovering new music (to yourself) as they're probably priced around a £1.
Doesn't really matter then if you aren't keen once you've ripped it (there's always the delete option) and you can donate it back on your next visit.
If you do like it everyones a winner.
Yep, thanks mike. Luckily there are plenty of charity shops around here, I haven't been in any of them as yet but I shall now make a point of going in them and having a good look. All this downloading, ripping and streaming seems to have re-lit my fire again!
Stephen , glad you did not throw the toys out of the pram just play the waiting game for the Naim streamer of your choice that's when all th hard work and frustration will seem worth it.
As others have said you have such a choice of good music at knock down prices from varoius sources.
I've yet to sort downloading HI Res but am quite stunned at the quality achieved by ripping second hand CDs even though they might have been released over twenty tears ago, never bought so many CDs since I sold my CD player.
Whilst you are waiting for your Naim streamer just keep buying and ripping.
Stephen, looking at the Hifi corner website they are taking orders now with ND5XS2 shipments for demo and preorders in August. Best call your dealer to find out the latest.

That's good to know Gazza, thanks.
I have already arranged for my dealer to contact me as soon as they receive a ND5 XS 2, it has been pencilled in, I see him do it on the computer.
Luckily, I live quite near my dealer and quite often i pass their shop with a wave.
Thanks

After a few days warm up I mean...hopefully burned in too. Unless, offer too good to miss on NDX.
Good evening folks,
I have just noticed that I have 6 days left on my 'free trial' Asset App and I want to go ahead and purchase it anyway. Do I purchase it on my laptop or via the Qnap app store?
I have a Asset control point on the lappy and i'm a little confused as to what to do.
Thanks
I think I have just purchased the Asset App but again (as is usual with the computer) I can't find it anywhere.
How strange?
I have attempted to purchase Asset, I gave my bank details and followed their procedure and AFAIK have purchased it. I can't find any proof that I have unless I go onto my online banking, where I can see the money has been deducted. If I go on the Asset app it now says I only 5 days left. I have checked my e - mail account - nothing.
I checked the Asset on - line and I have a order number. I try to install and it won't open!
Crikey, is there anything easy?
Stephen, have you followed the install instruction at https://www.dbpoweramp.com/ass...pnp-qnap-install.htm
Hi Frank,
I already have the 30 day free version installed with only 5 days left. Do you think that it could be conflicting when I try to install the premium version? In other words, do you think I will have to uninstall the trial version before I can reinstall the purchased version?
Nope, your Asset UPnP is installed directly on your QNAP. By the way, make sure that you bought and downloaded the correct version for QNAP.
Hi Frank,
I clicked where it says > download for all Qnap models supported< but I can't see any proof or receipt to show I've purchased anything but I have because it's been deducted from my bank account.
You must have received a receipt, check your spam folder.

Hi Frank,
I have nothing in my e-mail account but if I go on Asset on-line I do have a order number - it's all a bit vague I think.

Checked downloads folder?
Hi Drikus,
I have found it in the downloads folder but it won't open for some reason. I'm going to try a re-boot.
What's the file extension?

Asset-premi….qpkg 13.5Mb
You need to do a manual install into the Qnap. Browse to the .qpkg file in your computer. The Asset website has the instructions.

Yes, I did post the URL link to Stephen a few messages earlier in this thread. Not sure if he actually read it and went there.

I have read it all Frank, thanks. My page looks totally different to the one shown and I cannot for the life of me find 'manual install' anywhere or browse.
Ok. After a bit of clicking everything I could see and after a process of elimination I have found a way and installed it!! PHEW!!
I shall return tomorrow with a fresher mindset.
Thank you very much Drikus, Frank & Nigel for your patience in helping me. I very much appreciate it. I cannot believe I have managed to do it. I now need to go and meditate.
Cheers

At this stage this problem has nothing whatsoever to do with streaming and music playing, but use of a computer for online purchases and downloading of software. This may seem an unhelpful observation, but in much of this you have seemingly blamed streaming for being too complicated, yet when I asked you did say you had no problem using a computer for other things - so, just take a step back and consider what happens with other online purchase activity, and what the options are about where on your computer things go by default, and how you find them if not immediately obvious.

Wow! Congrats Stephen. I know you would do it, this stuff is just little difference from what you are used to, but once you get the hang of it, everything should be smooth sailing.
Thanks guys. It's like learning a whole new language. I'm not one for pressing keys on a computer, as I've said earlier in this thread, I can surf the internet and do internet banking fairly trouble free but learning to do computer audio, for me, takes a lot more concentration. I'm a bricklayer by trade and I don't have much to do with computers or smart phones for that matter, they bore the hell out of me.
With some help from you guys I managed to get there in the end.
