The £2000 Aro has landed

Posted by: Japtimscarlet on 26 April 2018

I notice someone is listing an (admittedly nice late) Aro arm with accessories close on the magic £2k mark on eBay

As an Aro owner I don't think I would pay much over half that for a nearly 20 year old arm

Not when Jonny 7 is making a nice new unipivot that is so highly rated

Dear all!
I am confusing anti-skate and azimuth. The seller was very competent, so it would be strange if he did not get this right. I used the thing with the boble inside to adjust the azimuth. Actually I had not seen the azimuth weight before now! I have a Tiger paw Skale and have adjusted the whole arm to be exactly level when on the record. So I have compensated with the Skale for the far placement to the left on the azimuth weight. I will readjust the whole thing now.
Thank you very much!

Fred

Fred, if you're using a sKale than you don't need the azimuth weight & it and its little arm can be removed. The sKale is accentric, and by adjusting it you can add azimuth. It's slightly fiddly to do, and keep the correct tracking force, but really doesn't take long.

Thank you, Tony.

As I have adjustet the Skale already it will be easy, but how do I know how much azimuth to ad?

The new arm from Tiger Paw should be rather interesting too.

I've seen the new TIger Paw  unipivot and it's a lovely looking arm

Have they said what cutout it will use? I will be upgrading to Kore/Akula in the near future

The azimuth  weight can be removed completly with the skale , but I would not be so quick to remove the post...it holds the earth wire for the arm in place on the inside of the cup with its securing nut ...

As mentioned the idea is to have the stylus at 90 degrees to the record

Than any further slight fine tuning can be done by ear

Thank you. It is 90’ now, allright, with the weight close to the arm. I pulled it out 1/3 and I think it sounds a bit clearer now.

The £2000 aro seems to have gone from eBay

Thought does not appear to have been sold though the site..  gone to an offer off eBay I suspect..  good luck to him !!

Spending £2k on an Aro from evil bay is not the way to go about it.

However, IMO it could be justified purchasing an Aro for £2k from a specialist LP12 & Naim dealer who could verify the arm was fully functional and in mint condition, offer a warranty for year,  and would include expert set-up on the customers turntable.

£2k for an mint condition Aro that can last a lifetime tends to look fairly sensible considering many cartridges do cost far more than £2k and only last a few years.

You do have a good point about the cost and lifespan of a decent cartridge..

Ebay has plenty of junk, often overpriced, and a few con-artists lurking, but I think it's unfair to suggest that it's all bad. There are plenty of legitimate sellers too (and several Naim dealers) and it's usually easy enough to judge a seller by asking a few questions, which a genuine seller is usually more than happy to answer.
