Leema's speakers with Naim
Posted by: Bouba on 27 April 2018
Hey all,
some of you may know I own several Leema speakers although my current set up consist in a pair of B&W PM1 I'm really glad with, fed by an Uniti Atom associated with a NAP 100 that care of the low-end.
Now, I actually own 2 pairs of Xeros (that I swapped from time to time throughout my 2 other systems - 1 Qute2 and a Nait 5si + CD 5Si)) I've always been happy with those even though they get even better when associated with amps that got guts or dare I say "hair on the chest". I used to own some Emotiva big mono blocks that even though not as musical and Gusto (to my taste) as any Naim amps did drive beautifully, until I decided to part with them but kept the 2 pairs of Xeros. I'm still happy with those but now I really tend to think that despite having tiny little mid/bass drivers (mere 10cm) these little monsters really do come to live when driven by more powerful amps.
I don't have the budget right now for buying a Nova, not just yet, but saving cash to get there ASAP. However, I now have an opportunity to extend once more my speakers collections (having sold a pair of LS50 recently) in the person of some Leema Xone small floorstanders with some exquisite exotic veener and unobstrusive fit.
Had a chance to listen to those, and I have to admit that I was taken by the speed, rthymic abilities and absolutely fantastic resolution and detail, but they were driven by a solid Supernait 2 amp. I even get the chance to bring them home and try them for a few weeks with my Atom and NAP 100 duo.
I immediately get rewarded with the details and fantastic midrange I noticed then. The only flaw I noticed was a slighty projected midrange and a sound that could be a tad shouty when really pushed hard; plus, one could wish for a little more organic low-end but other than that I absolutely found these speakers brilliant, with a soundstage to die-for and real PRaT.
Now comes my only questions: I have the clear feeling that the Leema could be a little hard to drive and that relative lack of low-end muscles could somehow be partially overcome with a proper positioning in the room while waiting for my Nova to land at home. Could those who owns or did have a listen to the Xone confirm ?
I did also think that Leema produced at least 2 variants of that same speakers: the one I listened to had a lilltle "plastic" logo-badge on the front, and a 4-5cm reflex port located at the rear-bottom end of the speakers. The 2nd version, that I'm offered now at a bargain price, seems to have redesigned drivers, at least from a visual-perspective, being marked "Leema Acoustics" and the speakers now sports a sensibly larger port (large enough to put my fist in there !!!)
Can someone here confirm my assumptions ? I'm also wondering if that latter version would be sonically different ? Did someone here have a chance to listen both ?
