UnitiQute 2 Firmware Update Driver

Posted by: NaimUKUser on 27 April 2018

Hi All,

I thought this little nugget might save someone some time -

Updating the UnitiQute 2 requires a Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Driver, the latest version of which can be found at the link below.

https://www.silabs.com/product...t-bridge-vcp-drivers

The latest driver is Windows 10 Universal (v10.1.1) - THIS DID NOT WORK FOR ME - the updater couldn't see the Qute 2.

After making sure no older driver was present, installing the above on Windows 10 64bit, trying different ports, hubs and cables, factory defaults on the Qute 2, several power cycles, the Naim Updater couldn't detect the Qute 2, even though the driver installed without errors, and Device Manager showed no issues.

Uninstalling the Windows 10 Universal (v10.1.1) device and software, and installing the Windows 7/8/8.1/10 (v6.7.5) driver, not the driver with Serial Enumeration, allowed the 4.6 Firmware update without issue. A further default settings and power cycle and all was well.

This also fixed the problem of the Qute 2 not finding any DAB stations - apparently due to factory settings not being applied at the last update.

I hope the advice gets placed somewhere prominent to save someone else time and frustration.

Yes you have to choose the right driver for it to work. There is a long thread about this from two or three weeks ago and many people had the same problem.

And the DAB stations issue is an old issue that was sometimes seen and could be fixed by doing a reset to factory settings, as Naim recommends after a firmware update.

I'm glad you sorted it out and it worked for you. I think the UQ2 sounds better after the firmware update. Did you notice any difference?

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. I did search the forums for information when I was having the problem, I guess I must have used the wrong keywords, as I didn't find anything useful. If you can remember where you saw it, it would be useful for others if you could link it here too.

I was unaware of the DAB issue until I read some posts on the 4.6 Firmware. I don't recall seeing anything about it being required with the previous firmware, otherwise I would have done it.

It's a shame both these pieces of information aren't clearly contained in the firmware update information.

It's frustrating coming up against a problem no one has had before, but it's considerably more frustrating coming up against a known issue, and wasting considerable time, when for the want of the right information, it could have been solved simply and quickly.

I haven't had the chance for a detailed listen yet, and I never tried any of the betas for comparison. Pre-upgrade, I was more concerned with noting down all the settings, and getting the UQ2 visible to the app, so I didn't listen to a few test pieces of music for a back to back. Glad you felt it was an improvement, did you notice it in any particular area? Has the general feedback been universal on the UQ2, or has it been dependent on what it's plugged in to?

Regards,

NUKU.

There are several threads which refer to the 4.6 streamer update and there are numerous posts on those. The first few days were mostly about how to do the update and then it gradually shifted to whether people liked it. A large part of the problem that people ran into was with the driver, which one to use and how to do the update. The same firmware was used to update UQ2, UL, U and U2, SU, 172, 272, ND5 XS, NDX and NDS so the threads don't have individual streamer names in the titles which is maybe how you didn't find them.

There are also threads on the 2.6 update for the new Unitis and quite a few people posted into the wrong thread....

I don't recall seeing many comments on sound quality in the UQ2 after the update, but certainly I don't remember any negative comments. I find the UQ2 is perhaps a little bit more open and engaging to listen to than before, but I might just be fooling myself.

One thing to note, which Naim hasn't publicised so far as I know, is that if your UQ2 is on firmware earlier than 4.4 currently, then you should do the 4.4 update first and then the 4.6 update. Otherwise some functions don't work (Tidal in particular - but I don't know what else).

For anyone reading this who has gone straight to 4.6 without going to 4.4 first, and wants to get Tidal to work, it's fine to update back to 4.4 and then update to 4.6 again. Then all will be fine.
