272 connection to ATC40A

Posted by: kaydee6 on 27 April 2018

How do I connect the analog output of the 272 to the XLR inputs of the ATC 40A? What are the pin configuration for DIN to XLR?

Also the 272 manual states 775mV as the output of the DIN, is this voltage too low for the XLR input of the ATC internal amp? Does this lead to a drop in power capacity of the the ATC actives?

Thanks.

When I enquired about how to connect my 272 to the ATC Active 40's both my dealer and Naim recommended using RCA to XLR rather than Din to XLR. Although I believe some have the Din to XLR connection, so slight confusion here.

Naim quoted: 'I would use RCA to XLR between 272 and ATC, the Din on the NACN272 is not capable of housing two cables to feed left and right ATC so I confirm RCA to XLR as the best way to connect and earthing is not compromised as the RCA is driving across the ATC balance input'

As to how the pins are connected, if you look at the entry series manual on the ATC website it details how both XLR to XLR or RCA to XLR are connected but it doesn't show the Din connection.

I hope that helps a little!

As Russ states , the RCA to XLR diagram is in the manual . I’ve just picked up some Mogami 2549 XLR in preparation for Actives from  HHB . Very well made and an inexpensive way to start , they do custom service.

I'm using the 4 pin DIN outputs from my 552 to XLR on my ATC active speakers.  My 552 is about to go on holiday back to Salisbury and I will then be using the two 4 pin DIN analogue out sockets on my NAC N272.

There are two cabling options - ATC first supplied two XLR leads into one 4 pin DIN plug (and that's what I used during my demo period of 6 weeks!) but I asked for separate L + R leads (why not?), so now have separate left & right XLR into the two 4 pin DIN sockets.

I have no issues with volume. The volume control on my preamp sits at about the same as it did when I was running a Naim amp into B&W speakers, usually around 8 to 9 on a clock face, up to 11 = very loud.

My 5m leads were made up at ATC using Van de thingy cable**, but Chord will make up any length for you (I auditioned Signature - 2 XLR leads into one DIN plug - very good, but whilst saving for a ND555, the price of Chords puts them back into the 'to do' list for now)

Of course if you prefer RCA over DIN, away you go

I have a Naim 272/555 dr and have a pair of ATC Active 40's coming in on home trial next week. Following a tip from Halloween Man here on the Naim Forum I called a company called Redco in the USA ( they are in Connecticut, I'm also in the States). I spoke to a very helpful guy named Chris there and he's making me up a 6 foot pair of RCA to XLR's Mogami 2549 interconnects for $36.  I used the wiring diagram on Halloween Man's profile. As mentioned the ATC 40a wiring pin layout is in their instruction manual online.

I also have a 52/Supercap so I also had Redco make me up a pair of DIn 4 to XLR's. I'm not sure which pre I'll end up using. I may use my 52/SC/250 dr in a separate system.

I had emailed Naim Support asking for any tips on the 272 cable and below is the response I got:

The NAC-N272 does not have any balanced audio outputs so you will need to use the ATC's via an unbalanced connection. We have many customers using 272's with SCM-40A's and it is easier to make a pair of RCA to XLR cables up than a single DIN to 2 x XLRs ... in this instance there is no real advantage to using the DIN connection and keeping the signal and chassis grounds separate.

We have no specific recommendations for cables to connect the 272 up to SCM40A's but some of our customers have had Chord Company make up interconnects and are very happy with them.

Best Regards

For unbalanced mono connections I would strongly recommend Mogami 2497 over Mogami 2549 or van Damme XKE.
