Rega P3 VS Rega P6

Posted by: Anto68 on 28 April 2018

can you tell me what differences in sound quality there are between the two models, if the Superuniti is able to show these differences or I can save money

Thank's for your help

The SU is transparant enough to show differences. But the old RP3 or RP6 have a better "Naim" soundsignature than the clearer/cleaner sounding P3 and P6.

New Planar 6 is much better than any Planar 3 by all accounts (depending on fitted cartridge)

Good amplifiers/setup will reveal this

P6 should be better looking at cost

I wasn't aware Rega decks have a "Naim" sound signature ? Free fantasy perhaps ?

Saving money ? Nah, get a s/h RP8 its really great

The P3 and P3 sounded far more "hifi" to my ears than the RP3/6 which have more fun sound/Naim style sound. So nothing to do with fantasy. Save money and get the RP3 with Exact mm.

Are we talking about the RP6 or the current Planar 6?

I knew that there was a huge improvement in the new models compared to the old ones, especially the new  RP6 with Ania cartridge , even if it is too budget for what I would like to invest for a turntable

What do you think about RP3 with Elys2

The RP3 + Elys2 is a lovely entry point for playing vinyl.  We bought my sister one as a present for an important birthday.  It really gives you a good hint at how good vinyl can sound.  It also tickles the curiosity gland to find out how much better vinyl could sound.  Therein lies the start of an upgrade path.

If you are really not sure about vinyl and just want to have a try without over-committing, then an RP3 + Elys2 is ideal.  If you are confident that you will like vinyl, then a Rega 6, 8 or 10 may prove to be a more satisfying way to go.

Hope this helps, FT

The New Planar 6!

Huge improvement it's not that seems odd because than the old RP6 should have sound like crap. There are only small differences with the new P3 and P6 sounding more clear/clean than the older RP3/6 types.

reading reviews on the web seems that the most noticeable difference between P6 and P3 consists of more air and more space between the instruments and deeper bass with P6

in the interesting topic "Vinyl back to the future" I read that an cheap  Pro-Ject debut carbon sounds better than a 272 .... then maybe it's better that I start from RP6 and Exact :- D

Thank's

Perhaps a Project Debut Carbon might be all you need, saving you money as per your original post.

Much as I admire the P3 and RP3 (having bought one too!), I would always miss the pitch stability that a better TT offers.  Perhaps an RP3 or the new P3 with the neo motor supply would address this issue.  But I could not live long term with an RP3 for this reason.  The neo outboard power supply might make all the difference.

Best regards FT

I can speak with some authority as I own both the Planar 3 and the RP6; and prior to that at least 5 other Rega turntables. The new Planars are in a class above all previous Rega models in the price range as they're more precise, have closer tolerances etc, and simply bring out (yet) more detail from the groove. With the new Neo there's no issue with pitch stability. I tested the Planar 6 against the RP6 and concluded that I liked the RP6 enough to keep it but add the Neo power supply, which is what I've done. Maybe I (and the poster above) like the colourations of the more resonant plinth, who knows. The Planar 3 I've been using with the RP6's own TTPSU (keep up) and in this guise, in my second system, sounds in its way as enjoyable as the main one. So in answer to the OP's post, I think a Planar 3 with an Exact and an older TTPSU would do a great job with the Superuniti.

I have a Project Debut Carbon. For the price it is a nice thing, however I had and still have quite an issue on rumble. It is endless tweaking two silly rubber washers to keep it right.

It also limits the upgrade possibilities. The element can be replaced and the power supply. Doing so is ok, but a dead end. Once that's done there is no way further.

The turn table learned me to appreciate vinyl, but it would have been better if I stepped in on a different level. My advice: don't start too low and keep your upgrade options open.

Pro-Ject TT's in general have a more fun sound than the more neutral Rega's. It all depends what you like. Both can have their issues, Rega with their carts and Pro-ject with motornoise/tonearmbearings.

Thanks Robiwan. I was yesterday listening to an old vinyl example of Ekseption on the ProJect and it was fun indeed.
