Latest 4.6 Firmware - Bugs in Software or Hardware Fault?

Posted by: Mr Frog on 05 May 2018

Hi

My ND5xs has performed faultlessly since 2011 and all firmware upgrades have successfully been applied over the various years.

Since installing the latest version (4.6), the streamer has started to have a "mind of its own".

When switching to other inputs (usually from iRadio), the unit automatically reverts to UPnP and starts playing random tracks from the QNAP NAS (Minimserver)!

Even using the Naim App (latest version) to put the unit in standby, it suddenly starts playing music ... very spooky!

Factory Reset doesn't help.

Basically, I have to constantly power off the unit and reboot everything. A few days later and the issue reappears.

It was working perfectly prior to the latest software install and the fault developed about 2 weeks later and can't be cleared.

The fibre network is stable and I use Apple Time Capsule (Bridge Mode) for all Networking (wired ethernet) .... which has been stable for years.

The only recent change, has been the latest 4.6 firmware update.

I also have a MuSo on the network (wireless) and that is working perfectly.

So, is this a software bug with 4.6 or is the ND5xs well and truly past its "sell by date" (I sincerely hope not)

At least the Rega RP10/Apheta 2 is behaving ... though if it started to play vinyl without any records being on the deck, I would suspect poltergeist!!!

Same problems with my ND5XS. Stick to the 4.4 or older version. Software and Naim, which is a traditional hardware brand, is not a good combi

I would contact Customer Support right away.  ????

Mmmmm, not as bad here with 272, but a bug I had back end of last year, of unit dropping in to mute is back since last firmware/ app update. Not quite as bad a last time, but still annoying. I have had to disable front logo mute in settings for now.

It doesn't make sense to assume its buggy firmware,  everyone else has loaded OK & are operating OK.    I've read of one case were it might not,  TBH it didn't make sense but the guy ran it again & it sorted itself out - try that.

I would be tempted to delete & reinstall the app while you're at it - what is the app;  iOS or Android  (Android is WIP)

That would also be my next move. Reinstall app and FW. If no change, roll back FW just to double check.

Factory Reset didn't work and neither did deleting and reinstalling the iOS App.

As suggested, I reinstalled the Firmware (4.6) via the Naim Installer (using a fresh download from the Naim site, onto the MacBook Pro)  this didn't work either

Finally, I completed another factory reset ... which also didn't work.

Next plan is to revert back to version 4.4, which I can live with - but thought Naim and other users ought to be made aware .... just in case its software related - though my ND5XS might be on its way out!

According to the Naim App (5.9.1), the Streamer version is definitely 4.6.00

Okay .... having now “rolled back” to version 4.4, I’m happy to report that once again, the ND5xs is working perfectly!

No issues whatsoever .... and I am really pleased that it definitely isn’t a hardware fault with my unit.

Whilst many users do not experience any issues with their steamer, it is apparent that there is a ‘bug’ in the latest 4.6 version, affecting the ND5xs.

Version 4.4 is rock solid.

Hopefully, the next software release, will rectify this issue. ????

How do you put your ND5XS into standby? Neither my ND5XS when I had one nor my NDS seems to have this feature.

Do you mean pausing music playback or clearing the play queue?

There is no standby mode on the old streamers, (only an adjustable time for the front panel display.) The new streamers have it to comply with energy efficiency regs.

Hi Chris,

I agree with you about no standby on the legacy classic streamers. However Mr Frog has indicated that he has used the app to put his ND5XS into standby but it would suddenly start playing so I was trying to clarify what he meant by "standby".

Isn’t there something about the system automation/output settings that causes this?...I seem to recall threads about it some time ago.

I may be mistaken of course.

Steve

Maybe he just meant using the pause button?

Indeed, that’s why I specifically asked that.

Yes, pause button to standby .... where upon it would suddenly start to play of its own accord.

The unit is now working perfectly again with 4.4

Upgrading to the latest 4.6 brings back all the issues, where the unit plays random tracks from the QNAP NAS.

SWitching inputs to Tv or iRadio, the unit would play for a few seconds and then switch itself back to the random tracks via UPnP.

The only way to stop it was to power off the unit entirely.

It would work fine for a short while and then start switching as before.

Using PAUSE to ‘standby’ the unwanted playback of random tracks, was affected too - simplying switching itself back to random playing from the NAS.

Hope this clarifies any unintentional confusion I may have inadvertently caused, by using the phrase standby ..... instead of pause ????

Mr Frog,  this is wierd,  I've linked your post to Naim HQ to be sure they see it

Thanks Mike - no worries, but thought you guys and Naim should be made aware ????
