Going active

Current system nds, 555, 52, sc, 300, SBLs. None of the above has been dr’d. I have ten shelves of Fraim, also lp12. In a fit of something, I am picking up a 250dr in a couple of days and also considering SL2s.

Contemplating going active. Not going to rush into anything but main options seem to be:

1. Trade 300 for second 250dr so I go active with 2x250dr. This is least cost / least shelves option, I could do sooner and could end up being end game (though I might always wonder what might have been if did 2x300)

2. Forget about active until I can go 2x300 (250dr then used elsewhere) - maybe next year

3. Go wonky active with 300 / 250dr as a stepping stone on the way to 2x300 - could later on trade towards a 300 (got it at v good price) or use elsewhere

Active 2x300 would def be the end game - mentally I could not cope with going 2x500

i think I would need a wall shelf for lp12 before I can house 2x300s

thoughts?

interestingly, you actually introduced yourself as "i'm that bloke who calls himself LILYFY" -- I recall I was sitting having a cup of tea and cake and chatting to TonyM at the time.

Good luck sourcing a snaxo242 -- i'm sure 'senior management' will approve purchase of critical snaxo soon so you can experience the magic of active 300/SL2s in your house.

And it is looking like a used snaxo 242 is coming available locally soon. Yikes! Need to work out how to squeeze 11 shelves’ worth of kit into 10 levels now...

and Ken, I am sorry that I didn’t remember speaking to you. I think I apologised at the time for not speaking to you in one of the dem rooms earlier as I didn’t know who you were. I misremembered that as apologising on the forum for not speaking to you at the event. Six years ago now!

edited to add - it was interesting to me that Jason from Naim has 2x300s active into SL2s - we nearly derailed the ND555 dem before it started by chatting about that to begin with!

There will be a slight delay - the room has to be decorated first. No way am I getting it all set up and then have to love it all for the decorator to reach the walls!

Progress update - snaxo in sight from someone leaving naim (along with another couple of shelves of Fraim), so nearly at the point of being able to do this. I think the only thing practically is to have the extra naca5 I bought terminated so I have four equal lengths.

Though still need to have the room decorated first. Still, I now have pretty much all the ingredients to go active into my SL2s after the summer hols are over.

Taken a long time to get here but I have never wanted to rush it. After all, from adding a super cap in April 2010; it took me just over 7.5 years to get from cds2 to nds, from 102 to 52, and from 180 to 300 which was my original aim. So a month or two to sort out the best way forward has been well spent

In the last few months I have also added Fraim (not installed yet), a pair of SL2s (SBLs now in loft running off unitiqute and 250dr) a second 300, a hicap and shortly to arrive a snaxo. To all of those people who have been telling me active is the way to go, all I can say is it’d better sound very good!

Exciting times! It might be worth paying for a dealer install as setup is supposed to be crucial for active systems. Look forward to your report on how it goes and sounds!
