Ndac 555 non DR or XPS2

Posted by: RichardD on 10 May 2018

Running bare NDac into 252 Sc 250.2 into PMC Fact 3s.

My room is fairly small and listen at lowish well below 9 oclock- usually at 8 oclock

Going to buy a used 555 or XPS2. Is the bass on the 555 fuller?? At low levels would i get the benefit?

Have seen previous posts to indicate the 555 can be bass heavy which I would not want.

Would appreciate views

regards

A no brainer really. 555PS! As a matter of fact, several if not many, will argue that nDAC/555PS non DR shows greater and more organic SQ than nDAC/555DR. It may have come somewhat all relative with the excellent nDAC firmware update 4.11.8 in late 2015. Enjoy. ????

Having done the XPSDR v 555(nonDR) comparison i would go with the 555 everyday. Better separation, bottom end and overall engagement.

I've compared those choices when looking to improve the PSU on my nDAC.  While the XPS2 was a bit better than my then XP5XS, I didn't think the improvement was worth the cost, XPS2 being twice the price of the XP5XS.  When I later tried a pre-loved 555PS (non-DR) it was wonderful and miles better than the XPS2.  You should expect more bass information if you put a 555PS on your nDAC, and a qualitative improvement, but I wouldn't expect the bass to overwhelm at moderate listening levels. In my (then) system, my Focal 1028bes needed some modest repositioning after putting the 555PS on my nDAC but that was only necessary because from time-to-time I like to listen to some heavy rock with the wick up.

I would also go with the 555 even though I use an XPSDR on my 272.  At least with the Fact 3s you have the opportunity to trim the bass slightly if you find it a bit excessive, at least assuming you’re currently running them flat.  Please report back on your experiences.

The 555ps really lifts the performance of Naim sources. I have experienced it on a CDX2 and ndac - very dramatic improvements to both.

555 is the way to go. Tried them all and 555 wins every day.
