4.6 update and change in gain

Posted by: jsaudio on 11 May 2018

I have noticed that I have to turn the gain up a little more to achieve the same volume on my 272 after the firmware update. Used to average 35-40 on the gain and now its more like 40-45 to get average 85db. Anyone else? Is there a setting I could have altered?

I use Asset/Q-NAP. Rest of system is listed. Thanks

Same here. You can adjust the gain for individual inputs on the naim app.

Yes, I’m using a higher volume setting as well. I thought it was just my imagination, and I’m pleased to read that it’s not.

Similar reports with 2.6 on the new Uniti range, in fact, similar reports overall

Same on my 272.

All the way up to 11 now.

I don't believe that the gain has altered, but the low level sonic 'hash' is now at an even lower level, so you can turn it up a bit more before it starts to appear to be  uncomfortably loud.

I believe this to be the answer

The 272 is just so much more comfortable to listen to now you subconsciously turn it up a little more

You may be right. The same thing happened when I swapped from a XPS to a 555 power supply. It sounded quite a bit quieter.

Yes, I'd forgotten that.

272 no external PSU.
272 + cuddly toy PSU (with a cable that cannot be naimed)
272 + cuddly toy PSU (with proper Naim 'Burndy')
272 + 555PSDR

Similar style of improvement at each step, but the last (the 555) was by far the biggest step up.

I guess thats possible ,Huge, except that when I measured the sound level it is about 5 db lower, on average at the same gain level pre vs post update.
