Uniti 2 upgrade
Posted by: gsr on 16 May 2018
Hi,
Currently have a Uniti 2 and a Unitiserve running into PMC 25.23s. Looking at next upgrade path.
option 1 - add NAP250DR to Unit 2
option 2 - sell Uniti 2 and get 272/250DR combo (don't really need CD tray!).
Listen mainly to Tidal.
Thoughts would be appreciated.

I had a U2 and now have a 272/XPSDR/250DR and love it. Have a friend that went from U2 to Star and he is very happy with that move. Plenty of options. You need to decide if you want multiple boxes or stay with just 1 box. Staying with the U2 is not a bad option. Add a Powerline to it.
Thanks for the reply.
Have a powerline lite fitted to the U2. Without the power supply, was the difference between 272/250DR & U2 enough to justify the extra outlay, don't mind extra boxes!
I swapped from a SuperUniti to a 272/250DR and the difference was huge, in terms of musical enjoyment and a much more natural sound. The streamer and preamp of the 272 are much more capable than those in the Uniti2, so if you go with your first option it would best be viewed as an interim step. As to whether the improvement is sufficient to justify the cost, only you can decide that. Make sure you have a good stand, and ideally dedicated mains, which will make far more of a difference than fancy wires.
HH is spot on. If you don't mind the box count or the cost then I would say it's well worth it IMO
If you don't need a CD tray the Nova would be worth a listen. One advantage over 272 is that it has the new streaming platform. I went from Superuniti to Nova and found it a big improvement both in sound and in functions.
As Spurrier said, I went from U2 to the Star and found the Star to be an upgrade in sound quality and the streaming functionality much much improved. I stayed with the Star because I figured that way I can rip my CD collection to a NAS once I get one. If I had a US or Core Id probably get the Nova. FWIW, somewhere around here someone commented that with the Nova, Naim has no plans to update the 272, essentially making the Nova the 272s replacement.
I really don't think that the idea that the Nova is the 272 replacement is correct and in any case I'm sure that Naim haven't said that.

It's kind of what was said. Seems like it was someone that spoke with a Naim rep at a show or something. Nova/250 supposedly is putting off 272 upgrade for a "couple" of years or something like that. Can't remember but it's in that line of thinking. At least what was posted on this forum that I read.
There is a lot posted on the forum that you don't want to believe! Anyway we will see, but apart from anything else, the absence of top mounted volume controls on the new streamers is a pretty clear indication that Naim recognise that the Nova etc are not suitable for putting in a Fraim stack!

Whoa now! I'm pretty sure if it's on the internet then it's true.
I though what was said was that the 272 is selling well and will not be replaced for a while. Anyway, it’s all second or third hand, and we will have to wait and see.

Yes, this was reported here after Bristol -- as to whether Naim actually said it... It is a bit odd to undermine a current product at a hifi show. Presumably they want to sell a few more 272...
