HDX backup

The HDX has an automatic backup which can be configured via the DTC, or browser interface. This allows a proper restore of all lost data in the event of a disc failure. I’m not sure if the old twin drive version is the same in this respect, but I’m sure Naim would be able to advise. 

Setting up a NAS for backup is a little bit of a faff if you’re not used to it. I would suggest you give Naim support a call, they know exactly what is required, and will be able to talk you through it. 

Thanks Chrissu.  Unfortunately, I'm in the US and NAIM doesn't have a corporate presence here.  And, even more unfortunately, the local dealers are worthless if it comes to anything more than "humming along to the tune" and collecting their 50% markup!

I guess I can e-mail them and see if they pick up.

FWIW, I also live in the US and have contacted Naim support via email and they responded with the information I needed.

I’m not sure if Naim can provide help via their US distributors, but if you call them in the UK, they should be able to help. They used to publish a how-to document for Synology and QNAP NAS setup which was useful, but perhaps a little dated now. Not sure about WD though. 

Perhaps I can offer some assistance here.

Essentially - as long as the rip folder (with all its subfolders) is copied over to an external drive, its structure is not altered, this is sufficient.

A piece of information, that is not widely advertised: a ripped CD (in a US / HDX created folder, with the necessary data), can be inserted into a rip folder of a UnitiServe / HDX and will be recognised instantly. Even if it comes from another UnitiServe or HDX.

So - provided you have copied all the HDX rips to an external disk, maintaining the folders' structure intact, you can upload those folders back to an HDX or a UnitiServe and they will be recognised.

I've successfully tested the above when my UnitiServe SSD was swapped from one to a new one. I simply pointed the new UnitiServe to my old rip folder. It 'read' all its content accepting it as its own and continued ripping to the same folder.

Adam:  When you refer to your "rip folder" is this the one you see on your computer in the MQ folder or is it something else?  My MQ folder (as see on windows network explorer) contains the artist folder(s), which contains the album folder(s), which contains the song (wav) files, the "folder" image (ie the album cover image), the amginfo file, amgreport file, cddbinfo file and the useredits file.

Is there any way to speed the back up to the NAS, when I did mine it was backing up around 700-800 Mega bytes at a rate of about 3 Mega bit /s. Took days.

I guess that was my wireless interconnect speed?

The MQ folder is the one into which CD rips are automatically saved. Newer single drive HDX also has a Downloads folder into which you can put any other music, but I think your twin drive model doesn’t have this? Although Adam’s suggestion is correct, I would still recommend setting up the fully automated backup to your NAS if you can. Again, I am not 100% sure if this option is available on the old twin drive models, but it should be easy enough to find out.

An Ethernet cable might be a good start!

Well, got the official note from the mothership:

"The dual drive units do not officially support backing up to a network location, only to their internal drive. It is possible to specify a network location to backup to on a dual drive unit but this is not supported and is not guaranteed to produce a valid backup".

I may plug away at this a little more and advise if the above approach works for me.

I had a feeling that this was the case. Nothing to stop you from doing a manual backup to an external drive for added security, even if it's just copying albums to a separate USB drive or NAS. You could always have the drives replaced by the current single 2TB version, which would allow you to use the automated backup, but having this done at the factory is rather expensive.
