World Cup Russia 2018 Thread
Posted by: Bob the Builder on 20 May 2018
As ever I'm very much looking forward to the World Cup as a football fan but again am struggling to find much enthusiasm for the England team. I can remember in the past getting excited about our prospects and being devestated at our losses in Italia 90, Euro 96, France 98 even up until Euro 2002 in Portugal when Rooney was such an exciting young prospect but since then my interest in the national team has waned and recent performances in South Africa, Brazil and the last Euros in France have just gotten worse and become an embarassment.
Hopefully though Gareth Southgates youthful looking squad can change all that and play without the fear that seemed to infect our squads in recent tournaments. Whatever we should be in store for some great football, I wonder who will be the surprise team, who will be the youngster that excites us all and who will win the Golden Boot this time round?

Demonstrating a world-class strut
Maybe extra pressure on the right side forces the ball left..... after saying that he hasn’t kicked it yet ........
Slight drift off the threads subject ............. Anyone watching or aware of BBC iPlayer is transmitting all England games in UHD. You need a 4K TV & set up an account, very simple on-screen instructions. Then in case you want more, its also available for Wimbledon.
Two very entertaining matches today. France’s talent and speed was extremely impressive, while Uruguay’s defense and overall team play was just superb. Really looking forward to their quarterfinal match next week!

What a world class goals by cavani compared to this ridiculous theatre.
We’ve seen some football tonight
Yes I can't remember a start to the round of 16 being as exciting as tonight.

Spain v Russia this afternoon I have tickets to watch it on a big screen on Brighton seafront which I'm thinking might not be the best idea in this heat with the crowds so may give it a miss, regardless should be great match!!
I'm actually in Spain for the world cup final so apart from England I'd love to see Spain win..
Spain v Russia, is it going to be penalties?

Yes,..what do you say, Spain is OUT...!!! ????.
???? BOB THE BUILDER,.... Unfortunately, when you are in Spain....no Spain in the finals.
/Peder ????
The first very, very negative result of the round of 16 people will applaud Russia's defensive qualities but for me it was awful. The only consolation is that Spain was probably the only team that Russia could have played this way against because any team who run at Russia's defence will annihilate them.

I'm sure my holiday will survive it would have been nice to enjoy a Spain win with the Spanish people but it wasn't to be.
Clears our route to the final...

???? BOB THE BUILDER,...I understand what you mean,I was on the island of Jersey in 1990, during the World Cup.
Me and my girlfriend sat in a crowded pub and watched England play, when England scored, you were almost scared.
It was an incredible atmosphere, we Swedes are known to be a little more cautious ????.
Currently I listening to Bob Dylan's song Tempest,13 minutes long..... to calm me down a little ????.

Plus no Iceland to contend with.....
Croatia Vs Denmark: real men playing a game. VAR has nothing to do. Glad Portugal is home, that team what dies like a swan when someone says 'boo'.
I feel a bit sorry for Schmeical, given he saved three penalties but Denmark were dull, as they have been in the group. Congratulations to Croatia. They have the potential to provide flair in the quarter final whereas Denmark do not, though I suspect Russia would rather meet the Danes.
Yes, congratulations to Croatia, did they deserve to win, not so sure. But definitely better suited to beat Russia then Denmark.
It’s such a funny old game! After Schmeichel saved Modrić’s PK in extra time, I would have bet on Denmark winning the shootout. They seemed to have the momentum. But then Subašić stole the show, and Croatia advanced. I am expecting a very similar game versus Russia in the quarterfinal.
Russia is to be congratulated for their stamina. Chasing the ball on defense for 120+ minutes is not an easy thing to do! The only positive thing I can think to say about Spain is congratulations on setting a new World Cup record for completed passes.
I'm afraid as I said earlier I cannot congratulate Russia for sticking 10 men behind the ball for 99% of that match but of course Spain played into their hands with their own brand of boring although less negative football.
Congratulations to Croatia the correct team won because despite Schmeichel saving Modric's first penalty Croatia were denied an open goal by a very cynical Danish foul. Although niether team played very well Croatia on balance deserved to go through.

I can’t understand why the Danish defender wasn’t sent off. After all he was the last defender and clearly denied the Croatian foward a goal scoring opportunity. Have the rules changed for the World Cup?

Yes, the IFAB changed the rule a couple of years ago, reducing the the punishment for impeding a clear goal scoring opportunity. Players can still be sent off for obvious holding or for a flagrant deliberate handball in the penalty box, but not when the ref thinks they are legitimately trying to play the ball. That's now a yellow, not a red plus suspension.
