World Cup Russia 2018 Thread
Posted by: Bob the Builder on 20 May 2018
As ever I'm very much looking forward to the World Cup as a football fan but again am struggling to find much enthusiasm for the England team. I can remember in the past getting excited about our prospects and being devestated at our losses in Italia 90, Euro 96, France 98 even up until Euro 2002 in Portugal when Rooney was such an exciting young prospect but since then my interest in the national team has waned and recent performances in South Africa, Brazil and the last Euros in France have just gotten worse and become an embarassment.
Hopefully though Gareth Southgates youthful looking squad can change all that and play without the fear that seemed to infect our squads in recent tournaments. Whatever we should be in store for some great football, I wonder who will be the surprise team, who will be the youngster that excites us all and who will win the Golden Boot this time round?

Here we go then, Brasil v Mexico, with, hopefully, a cracking game in prospect.

Just sat down ready for the Brazil v Mexico game. Really looking forward to this one.

I don’t think this game will be going to penalties....

High pressing, attacking football is much more fun to watch!

Just rushing home on a sweltering train to catch the last 15 mins. Neymar had just scored Brazil 1 - 0 Mexico.

What a mad World Cup it’s been so far imagine if Brazil go out too!

Did someone forget to learn Neymar to use the legs to keep standing?
Posted on: 02 July 2018 by dave marshall
Well, Brasil, a class apart, in the much loved blue and yellow, produced another slick, skilful display to comfortably win the match.
The shine was taken off by Neymar's constant theatrics, but I was able to ignore that as I watched Willian cover every blade of grass.
Some individually great players, who stroke the ball around with aplomb, and seem to know instinctively where their teammate will be
to receive the pass.
Who'd bet against them to go all the way?

0-1. Now please get another, Japan!!

0-2. I might give up the snapping game and go into coaching.

2-2. Decided to stick with what I know

Fellaini. Great bloody lump, can't stand him.

Great game. What a pity Japan were knocked out.
Let's hope Brazil destroy Belgium.

Desperately hard luck for the Japanese, who worked their socks off against one of the fancied teams.
They showed some great skills, and certainly, at one point, it looked to be all over for the Belgians.
Didn't see that one coming at all.

Oh, what a great game this evening. I think I'm a fan of Japan now. Most teams, having snatched a quick two-goal lead against one of the 'elite' sides, would have immediately resorted to parking-the-bus, time-wasting, feigning injury, trying to get opposition players booked. Not Japan. They continued to push on and went for a third. Huge credit to them for playing with such optimism. So cruel to lose to a last-minute sucker-punch.
Credit to to Martinez for his substitutions. Belgium should give Brazil the toughest test they've yet had in this World Cup.

A fantastic advert for the game, played in a great spirit without malice and no rolling around antics.
Well done both teams. Football was the overall winner tonight.

Great game I thought the Japanese were the superior team right up until the last five minutes when the excitement got the better of them and the threw too many men forward. A great shame for the Japanese but what a fantastic match.

Belgium! Brazil change your tickets, you'll go home soon.

I think it’s going to be one great football match, Belgium have a really good chance of causing an upset....

Brazil and Belgium are ranked 2nd and 3rd in the FIFA rankings so hardly an upset if the latter win.
Mind you only 9 of the top 20 FIFA ranked teams remain in the competition so what do FIFA know.
A really enjoyable tournament so far, much better than I had anticipated.

If Belgium play against Brazil the way they did for the first 70 mins against Japan they will get punished, I think the winner of this quarter final will be favourite to go on and win.
I watched a replay of the Brazil game and apart from Neymar's breakdancing on the sideline they looked slick and very confident. Personally I would have preferred a Brazil v Japan quarter final.

Loved that Japan Belgium game.
Japan played bold and energetic football with great quality. Not totally sure Belgium deserved to win in the end but a fine match. No ridiculous rolling around either (Neymar should spend an evening in a trauma unit and see what pain from broken bones actually looks like).
I have no real expectations for England this evening other than I doubt it will be nowhere near as fun, or as high quality.

Maybe it's time to play Tina Turner's "Simply The Best" ????????????.
But yes,it feels good, hope it goes as well for England later.....

Just watched Sweden's win and will watch the England game in 90 minutes. If England wins, those two wins today pretty much cover my ancestry. Not a huge soccer fan but nice to watch it at this level and have a small connect to teams to cheer for.
