Bose replacement

Posted by: Fitz55 on 20 May 2018

i have a very good mate who I turned on to Naim some years ago. He is now mainly using a Bose unit to play his precious play list from an iPhone. Every time I am around there I cringe listening to his music. He has a significant birthday coming up and I would love to replace it. I was looking at B&W zeppelin but they don’t seem To be available anymore (in New Zealand) Any suggestions.

Get him something he wants, not what you want?

Isn’t that the running theme in an episode of Frasier?

How good a mate is he? All current Naim streamers will play Bluetooth or Airplay from a phone, including a Muso QB, which costs a little more than a Zeppelin.

No idea! My french telly will only show re-runs of Midsomer Murders and the Cycling for some odd reason.

One approach would be to buy yourself a Qube or Muso, invite your friend round, and take turns to pick music, he selecting from his phone. If he loves it and says ‘wow, that sounds fantastic, what is it?’, when his birthday comes give it to him. If he seems indifferent, just enjoying the time but not struck by the sound, then get him something completely different.

But doesn’t the fact that you turned him on to Naim some years ago, since when he has moved to Bose, tell you something? I’d tread cautiosly if he has abandoned Naim for Bose. If on the other hand he still has and likes his Naim based system, but the Bose enables him to play music on his phone and he wants that rather than his collection of LPs or CDs or whatever, then maybe a DAC that can link his phone to the hifi system (Mojo or Hugo come to mind, but there are others).

Thanks Innocent Bystander, I think it is the ease of use that is driving the Bose, I will look into the DAC option.
