Naim app munching battery?

Posted by: xcentric on 26 May 2018

Do others find the Naim app drains their battery quickly?  Am on a newly-refreshed battery iPhone 7, and whilst it normally lasts all day, with the Naim app on, it's dying after about 6 hours.....

Technically, unless it's doing lots of networking in the background to discover services and suchlike, it shouldn't take much power to keep a wifi connection and send occasional control signals, so am wondering if it's just me, or if others have noticed it?

I have a long extension for my charger and keep it plugged in all the time when on the app

yes.

better off?

Well it should use less power on your phone and no real need to keep it on, charge your phone then switch it off and see does it make a difference

Doesn't on my 5S.

I would turn off "stay connected" unless you find you need to have it on. Then when the phone or iPad is on standby, the app isn't doing anything at all, so can't drain the battery.

How do you know its the Naim app thats draining the battery,  I've always assumed once its hooked up & running (passively) UPnP or www or iRadio its pretty much just idling.

I find 'stay connected' doesn't do much plus I have my iPad (& android phone) sleeping under their smart covers when its playing music

With IOS you can see which app is using what proportion of battery capacity. You select Settings, Battery and let "battery usage" refresh (this is on IOS 10 but it will be similar in IOS 9 and IOS 11 I'm sure. I see that the Naim app has been 5% of my useage since it was last charged (last night).

21% on mine in the last 24hrs! And I have stay connected turned off????. It’s interestin though as I have noticed my ipad battery is running down faster these days, I wonder has it anything to do with latest app update and/or firmware?

On Android and I do not have stay connected on, I have never even seen the Naim app register on battery usage (so must be very low).

3% on my IPAD in last 24 hours and 2% in last 7 days.

Indeed,  but my question to the OP was 'How do you know its the Naim app thats draining the battery'.    I'm well aware of the measure of app usage percentage of the whole over time,  its not indicating a specific app that's drawing excessive power - as in 'munching battery'.

True, so my 21% means that of the power used in the past 24hrs 21% of it went on the Naim app, which could be interpreted as being I spent approx 21% of the time on my ipad using the Naim app in the past 24hrs or such like

It means 21% of all the power used over the last 24 hrs was on the app.,  not that you've been on the app 21% of the last 24 hours

On iOS 11.3 the Battery Health (Beta) shows each individual app's battery usage, over the last 24 hours, or alternatively over the last 7 days. Mine's running at 34%/36% for the Naim app respectively...

I've got the app on two android mobiles and one iPad with no issues with battery. We do tend to close down the app when we finish listening because you can only use app on one phone at a time. Rich

You shouldn't need to close the app to enable its immediate use on another device. As long as you haven't got "Stay connected" selected, just going out of the Naim app to something else like email or the home screen makes it possible to use the app on another device immediately. I use my iPhone and iPad (and my wife's iPhone) like this all the time, grabbing whichever is closest to control the Naim kit.

The old streamers  and musos cannot handle more than one device at a time unfortunately. This was one of the steps back compared to the windows servers, and something that has been  reenabled with the new streamer platform.

Sure yes that's right. But all you have to do is put the app in the background or close the cover on the first device and you can immediately connect with the app on another device. My point is that you don't need to stop the app.

Multiple android and iOS Naim apps here. One iPod Touch is 5 years old and dedicated just to the Naim app in the main system. I use "Stay Connected" beacuse this reduces some delay when the app tries to reconnect and I'm too impatient to wait 3 seconds for it to reconnect and reload the current album info. I manually turn the screen off though when I put the unit down.

I get about 2 weeks on a charge even with the latest iOS "we want to fore you to upgrade for your own good" version from Apple.

One other Android device (old smartphone I no longer use with the SIM removed) is also dedicated to the office system. I get about a week plus of battery on that. Again. "Stay Conneted" on but manually turning off the screen when I'm done with it.

further investigation leads me to believe it's actually the Spotify app, launched via the Naim one, not the Naim itself.....
