amp

Would you spend a little more for a 300DR amp than a 250DR, to currently partner with a 272.  Likely upgrade route is separate pre and NDX 2 when it's out, so also keep that system in mind.  Driving Ruark Crusaders but in 12 months or so those may be changed for something else too.  But getting sources right first.

Have an option on a 300DR at about £2k more than a 250DR......

It's more about bass and control at low volumes than noise, though it is in a biggish room (6m x 12m, but tend to listen from about half way down).

i would upgrade the pre and the source first.  i prefer 282/hicap/ndx/250dr vs 272/ 300dr. But if you have a good price on the 300dr, why not....

I had a listen to a 272/300 when choosing my current system, and thought it was a lot of fun. It was a bit of a wild beast of a system, which I thought would be great for parties. Not really something I could live with, though. In the end I  went for NDX/282/200 which sounded more refined.

So what was the difference on sound you didn't quite gel with? I'd assumed the 300DR would be like the 250DR only slightly more punchy, but not less controlled.....

the pre has to control the amp with grip and ease. 272 is more 202 than 282 pre.  202/300 is not a best combo.  But perhaps it is just a step ?

I used a 250dr in my system (See Profile) for over a year changing to a 300dr earlier this year in my system the 300dr is in a different league much more grip and control.

Listening t low levels is greatly enhanced undoubtably the best upgrade I have ever made but you must take into account the rest of the system but for me and my system/room it is a no brainer.

I was listening with a pair of small floorstanders, which were a very easy load for a 300, and you could tell that the amp was able to really grip them and control them. Note that I was using a 272 with no external PSU, and I suspect the 300 may have been showing up the shortcomings of the source/preamp. With a PSU, it may be a different story, but I didn't want more boxes, so I didn't try.

Many people have said that the 300dr is like a bigger 200dr but both sound different from a 250dr.  I have not heard either 300dr or 200dr

I have a 300 (non dr) which wipes the floor with the olive 250 it replaced in my main system (nds/555/52/sc/300/SBLs). I really ought to try the 250dr i picked up cheap recently in my main system  (it is boosting my office unitiqute/nSat system in a rather pleasing manner) but it’s too much effort!
