Superuniti BT - won’t play Apple lossless files

Posted by: Nigel Collins on 29 May 2018

I have just acquired a Superuniti.  My old streaming system was a logitech squeezebox touch through a Cambridge audio dac and a Linn Intek amp.  The server is a Logitech Media Server (which I like because it integrates well with iTunes although it’s a bit buggy).  Nearly all my music is ripped to Apple lossless (m4a).

The problem I have is that although the few mp3’s I have play well I can’t play any m4a files.  I get a message “can’t play unable to open stream”

can anyone help please?

Use a upnp server like asset and set to play as wav your Superuniti will thank you you may have to ditch LMS and use Naim App

Can you confirm m4a files play OK if you try them on a memory stick on the front USB port?

Thanks both

xenasys - yep might have to do that but I want to keep a Logitech radio for kitchen so will end up running 2 servers

calumm - yes m4a files play perfectly through the USB port on front

I’ve had no issues with SU playing ALAC.  I’m using MinimServer on an iTunes-maintained library on a synology nas if that’s any help.

I never had issues playing ALAC on my NDX.  Logitech Music Server did not work for me at all, other than on my Squeezebox Touch.  MinimServer was the answer for me.

I did find AIFF seems to sound slightly better, to my ears, and solves all cross-platform file compatibility issues, at the cost only of extra storage space.

I have not found converting AIFF to WAV on the fly via MinimServer makes any difference I can hear.

The upnp server in LMS is not great. If your running it on windows there was a good upnp add on called White Bear I used to use that worked well.  Not sure there is an equivalent on Mac. You could run LMS and another upnp server in tandem though.

I’ve tried using LMS on a Mac, and a Synology NAS. Once I’d finished endlessly faffing around making multiple attempts to instal third party plugins that are essential to make just about anything work, I still found it incredibly unreliable and temperamental.

Thanks all.  I tried using 'whitebear' but haven't got it to work yet but will spend a bit more time.  Think I'm coming to the conclusion to try either minim or asset and keep LMS for my Logitech radio used in kitchen.  A supplementary question - I use LMS to access radio 4 on catch-up - can i do this through the superuniti?

Quite the opposite for me.

I find the iPlayer radio app the best way to access BBC catchup. I would just use that with Airplay and an Airport Express.
