Nac 282 connection questions

Posted by: maxmagri on 02 June 2018

I can't understand the purpose of Link 2 rear socket. Is it a fixed output for sub speaker or a variable output for non-Naim power amps? Thanks in advance.

the Link 2 socket usually has a large paddle link fitted, unless you are utilising the Upgrade 2 socket (i.e. using a second Hicap or a Supercap to power the analogue stages of the NAC282).  Other than the paddle link, it should have NO other plug connected to it.

If you want a pre-amp output, then these are found on the connected power supply (Hicap or Supercap) which provides three stereo pre-outs.

n.b. note that a subwoofer should not be fed a fixed output but rather a variable output from the pre-amp.

I'm going mad. Has Link 2 a purpose in this world other than a location for the paddle? Is there a chance to connect the 282 to other non-Naim power amps without the PSU signal outputs? The meaning of the world Link in english language is clear even for an italian like me. I can't imagine it's only a hole for the paddle. I promise this is my last post. Probably I will go with other easier systems than Naim. Maybe I'm wrong but many prople told me to stay away from Naim. Naim means good (very good) sound but impossible setup and impossible connection scheme. Also I think there is a general lack of clarity in manuals and knowledge base. Thanks at last.

The purpose of the Link 2 socket is to enable you to use a single power supply - the pins on the link plug make the appropriate internal connections. If you want to use two power supplies, or both supplies from a supercap, you remove the link plug.

It is not ‘impossible’ to set up. If you said what power amp you were trying to connect then it would be easier to provide guidance.

The manual shows clearly that there is NO connection possible to the Link 2 socket.  It connects some circuitry to bypass the need for the second Hicap, if you only run with one Hicap or power the pre-amp from a suitable Naim power amp.  Do not try to connect anything to this socket other than the link plug, otherwise you may well cause damage to the pre-amp.

In order to use the NAC282 with a Non-Naim power amp, you must power the analogue stages from a dedicated power supply - it has no power of its own.  The pre-outs are on the power supply - 3 x DIN4.

By the way, in case you're wondering, the little NAPSC supply only powers the logic and control systems.  This keeps the audio side very clean.

Did you follow the instructions in the connection guide?

it doesn't help me.

Even with a non-Naim power amp, the connections will essentially be the same as one of the diagrams in the connection guide. What PSU do you have for the 282?

thanks for your kind attention but I will sail on other seas ...

Best of luck. Stay away from rocks, reefs and beware the Kraken...

In another thread the OP wanted to connect the 282 to a non-main power amp using a non-Naim PSU.
