power up ?

Posted by: samtheman on 02 June 2018

Help required please.

Have just returned from a weeks holiday and had powered off all equipment, i have returned today to find that i do not seem able to power up the XPS / NDS.

I am new to streaming and the dealer set the system up, i had an existing NAC282, NAP 250 and Hi Cap, i have added in an XPS, NDS and Murco, i assume the XPS is powered by burndy cable as it is not powered by direct cable to the mains.

I have powered the system back and have power to the pre amp power amp, hi cap and Murco but the XPS and NDS are refusing to do anything ?

I assume i am being very dense (not unusual) and am missing a trick ?

Any help suggestions gratefully received.

Possibly the internal fuse has blown on the XPS. Check that first

Thanks FINKFAN, that already sounds way too complex, i am a complete technophobe, if you think its likely to be a fuse i will speak to the dealer on Monday.

It’s very easy to find and there should be a spare in there too. It’s on the back of the unit where the mains cable plugs in. Switch off the unit and unplug. You just pull the fuse carrier out and there should be 2 fuses in there. Hopefully a broken and possibly black one, Along with a nice new one. Just replace the broken fuse with the good one and slide the carrier back in. Plug back in and follow the switch on sequence.

@Samtheman it's really easy. If you look on the back of the XPS you will see the mains input cable (i.e. Not the Burndy!) Pull that plug out of the back of the XPS. Right next to the socket on the back of the XPS you will see that there is a sort of trap door with a slot around it. Gently lever that out with a small knife or similar. It will come out with two fuses. One is the one that has blown and the other is a spare. Just swap them, keeping them the same way round (if you are a perfectionist, but either way will work fine. Put the fuseholder back into the XPS, pushing it all the way in. Then put the main power plug in and turn the XPS on and enjoy the music.

Then on Monday get your dealer to send you a few spares. They have to be the right ones so do go to your Naim dealer.

I see I crossed with Finkfan, but anyway it's the same advice. Go for it!

best

David

I believe the NDS is powered by the XPS, not the other way ‘round. Try plugging the power cable into the XPS, not into the NDS. The Burndy will then take power from the XPS to the NDS. Hope that solves the problem.

There is no mains power socket on the NDS!

Sorry David & ”Samtheman”, my mistake. I was thinking the NDS has a power input like my 272.

My thanks to David, FINKFAN and Robert, I did find and change the fuse this morning and it is all working beautifully.

A few questions arising from that, do I get replacement fuses from my dealer or direct from Naim ?

Before I switched front ends I would power up in order, 1, the pre amp, 2 the power amp, 3 the Hi Cap and then the source. I would power down in the opposite sequence 1, the  power,  2 the pre , 3 the Hi Cap and then the source.

Do I need to change this order and if so where does the XPS fit in ?

Thanks again to the above, all advice etc gratefully received.

Get your dealer to organize the new fuses.

There is a shut down and start up order in the FAQs.

Shut down is power amp, Pre amp, source (XPS)

Start up source (XPS) , pre amp, power amp

leave a few seconds between switching on each box.

The XPS is known to have a bit of a habit of blowing fuses with the switch on surge.  It's recommended that you press the power button in quite firmly rather than being tentative; as being a bit tentative with it can induce 'switch bounce' and that increases the chance of a blown fuse.

Note: this doesn't represent a fault, just that very occasionally unfortunate circumstances can come together at the instant of switch on to overload the fuse.

With the XPS, it may be worth getting a couple of additional spare fuses for the future so you don't have to go to a dealer again (they're relatively cheap).
Incidentally if you're comfortable sourcing them yourself Naim are known to use fuses from "The Littel Fuse Company"; you need to use slow blow (i.e. anti-surge) fuses and you must use the same rating as the original (this depends on the mains voltage in your country).

Interesting... I didn’t know this about the XPS2, but it is true I never had a fuse go on my 555PS, but I did once  on my XPS2 on turn on. From memory the XPS2 comes with a spare fuse in the fuse holder.... (I have sold mine now so can’t check)
