quadraspire bronze

Am planning on getting the bronze top upgrade to my Q4.  Looking around the inter web I noticed that just about every system picture using the bronze top has an extra shelf underneath.  The quadraspire site has comments and pictures that indicate no extra shelf is needed or even advised.  This is confusing as the extra shelf adds expense and seems to offer no use to placing additional equipment as the spacing is so narrow.  I think I am missing something.  Can anyone offer any enlightenment?

I use bronze spikes on my Quadraspire SVT. I initially had just the spikes installed at the top of the columns and noticed an immediate benefit so they can be used that way. However buying an extra shelf, or two if you have brawn and brain racks, brings further benefits. The extra shelf improves stability and so gives the spikes less work to do.  When I added the extra shelf, two in my case, I got a further performance uplift.  A friend has Q4 and has similarly gone for the spikes with a further shelf below.

So you can just add the spikes and should hear a benefit, and maybe later try adding a stabilising shelf when it suits you.

Thanks.  If you don't mind, would you tell me the nature of the change that came from adding just the spikes.

From memory it was mainly a drop in the noise floor and better definition at the bottom end. At the time my dealer and I did a bit of experimentation, trying different kit on the top two shelves using the bronze spikes (before the added extra shelves) to see which gave the best sonic benefit.  I thought that would be the source components. However we agreed that the winner by a fair margin was the pre-amp and its PSU which was then a 282 and Supercap.

Much appreciated.

If you intend to use the extra shelf, you need to ask Quadraspire to supply long bolts with the bronze upgrade, otherwise they won’t be long enough to go through the shelf.

MDS and HH are both absolutely spot on.

Bronze cones do indeed drop the noise floor. This was especially noticeable on the LP12, but also the streamer. Highly recommended.

They do look a bit odd without the extra shelf, as they’re standing on tip toe.
