Question about backing up using a Unity Core

Posted by: Thorsten_L on 07 June 2018

Hi there!

I have a question about a following scenario:

I have a HDD in my Core. I want to transfer the content of this HDD to another HDD. I would like to do this in a way that I could use the new HDD immediately as "my music" and start listening.

I know that I can do a back up to a USB drive. Then create a new store on that new HDD and back up from the USB drive.

Isn´t there a "direct" way without first making a backup and then restore that backup? Like mirroring the HDD to another HDD and start replay at once?

Thank you.

You could use a USB to dual SATA docking station with offline clone function. Disclaimer  - I have not tried it for your scenario (Unity core HDD) but don't see why it should not work.

Google "Startech USB Dual docking station" or search for it in the Big River and you'll find a device which will automatically mirror two hard drives (as well as acting as a USB drive bay). This is done at a sector level, so the contents of drive B will the exact same as drive A. That having been said, this seems a sledgehammer to crack a nut as the dock will cost you £££'s, whereas the backup and restore function within the Core is effectively free.

Or get one of these if its available from amazon uk. It doesn’t cost much.

Direct cloning. No need PC.

So, let´s say I get a Qnap NAS and I want to backup my Core to that NAS. Won´t the backup-music-files show up as duplicates in my NAIM app then?

And I could then make a "backup-plan" to regularly backup to that NAS, right?

No they won't show up as duplicates in the app unless you make the NAS a music share, which you wouldn't do obviously. If the NAS has a upnp server installed on it then it will show up as a server alongside the Core in the app and you could choose to browse that instead of the Core or not. It's all very intuitive.

Yes you can set up a backup plan to a NAS. The only issue at the moment is that sometimes the Core has difficulty in finding shares (and backup locations) on the network. Naim know about this and it's high up the list for fixing......

Ok. Thank you very much, David. Seems the way to go. I guess I won´t need a upnp server on the NAS.

Indeed.

An argument going the other way is that if something were to go wrong with your Core, then having a spare upnp server on your NAS would come in handy.

Certainly an option to put a server on your backup NAS. Mainly because, if the Core fails, you can immediately start playing music from the backup while you wait for a repair. You may also find subtle differences in sound quality and functionality between the Naim server, Asset, Minimserver etc.

What if I remove some dics or albums or specific files from the Core, will those files be removed accordingly from the back up copy as well so as to make the back up copy consistent with the ones being used on the Core ?

Good question! I don't know the answer  I'm afraid.

Hope somebody can answer this question because I don't want to do a restore (in case) with a lot of deleted albums and files.

I've just run a backup to a USB drive, all went okay, message said backup successful. Now trying to update the backup and it's wanting to reformat the disk to back up and says it will delete the existing backup! I had it unplugged between backups. Does the back up drive need to stay connected, or am I doing something wrong? I’m a bit hesitant to wipe my backup.
