Difference in SQ after various changes

Posted by: jsaudio on 07 June 2018

I made 3 changes to my system simultaneously which resulted in a change in SQ that I can't fully describe other than it just doesn't sound quite as good. Doesn't keep me engaged the way it used to.

System: 272,555PS,300,Sopra-3,powerlines,Superlumina speaker cables/interconnect.

Changes to system:

1. Created brains and braun stack with Fraim. Was only single stack before.  272/space/300 head unit on the right. TT/space/555PS/300PS on the left. The Burndies for the 300 are on the carpeted floor between the racks as they are on the lowest level

2. Added Superlumina interconnects 272 to 300.

3. Updated firmware for the 272 to the 4.6.

All 3 done at the same time. I know I should have done 1 at a time but there you go.

I guess what I'm asking is for opinions as to the most likely source of the change. Of course the most obvious solution would be to back track each change one at a time but I want avoid doing that if possible. I was hoping that the Superlumina interconnects may settle in but its now been about 6 weeks.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Superlumina is notorious for taking an age to come on song. If you can, remove it in favour of the original cables until you get the system working to your liking again, you can put it back later as a single change.

Does that do the trick in itself? If not try getting the Burndy's off the floor which will mean moving things higher in the racks and maybe putting the 300ps aboove the 555ps, the poweramp Burndys will probably pass in front of the 555ps one. You can also try the turntable above the pre, my 552 doesn't seem to mind that but sulks if the 500ps is level with it or higher in the adjacent rack, the 272 is likely less fussy about that sort of thing.

Give yourself time between each change to get used to it and maybe for the boxes and cables to settle unless it's blatantly obvious there's something wrong.

Experiment with plug order if you use a block, with so few units to plug in it will be an easy test.

Once you've exhausted all that you should find something to your liking, then put the superlumina back and decide if it was money well spent after about 3 months.

Keep playing music through Superlumina

It will come on song, eventually.

The latest software update was divisive to say the least, so I would suggest rolling back to 4.4 because it is probably the easiest change to make without having to move any boxes.

Shouldn't the brawn stack be on the right and the brains on the left to move the tranformers in the PSs as far away from the brains components as possible. At the moment these noisy transformers are immediately next to the brains components.

That's true too.

All great suggestions so far. Thanks. Will probably switch the stacks to have the brains on the left and move the 300PS above the 555PS which may allow the Burndies to clear the floor.

However I didn't think the Superlumina interconnects can take as long as suggested by Yeti42 to settle in so I may wait longer although the changes in question should certainly not hurt.

Yes, brains should be on left, and burndies off the floor. With the 272 there seems little point in changing the firmware as it’s pretty well accepted that 4.6 is better. You could always try of course. Make sure the din to XLR leads hang free without touching anything. They take a long time to run in, but after six weeks should certainly be better than the standard leads.
