Streamer Madness - Allo DigiOne the way to go

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 07 June 2018

After having suffered Naim streamers for the past several years, I've finally found the solution that I think is the way forward:

Running Allo DigiOne into Naim Dac into 272/250.

The Naim Dac is better than the 272's dac and the Allo DigiOne leaves nothing to be desired. At $200 more than a bargain - it's the right price for throwaway tech that changes everyday.

In any case, Roon runs on it - as does upnp.

Will sell the 272 when I find a 282 at a good price. (or a Nac72).

Leaving NDS/552/500 alone though - the 552/500 is way too sensitive - and don't have the time to mess with that right now.

I had  a  Raspberry Pi into a Chord 2Qute into a 282/250 and it sounded great MM so I get where you are coming from and for the money it is almost impossible to beat.

I think you are using Roon, do you recommend that....?

with the DigiOne. Totally. It's certainly worth the free trial.

I use Pi's in my second non Naim system and use it with Roon and Spotify, and they do sound good. Just ordered an Allo USB Bridge so keen to see what it brings to the table in sonic improvement. Might plug it into the Atom to, just to compare.

Absolutely -- a great piece of kit. Roon and Upnp as Mango mentioned, and also LMS. I have tried all three outputs, and it's fun to play around -- use different outputs, use different apps. Re LMS, however, there are issues when using DietPi -- instead I have used PiCore. I got one of those adapters that allow slotting in two SD cards. A simple switch allows you to boot "the other" SD card. The adapter isn't expensive (though prices vary a lot by location, e.g US is much cheaper than the UK). Re Roon, it works brilliantly as Roon Endpoint. I had the Core on my QNAP, which made Roon a bit slow, but fine for experimenting. However, it is worth to note that there can be issues with Roon and Linux when using Android devices...

Mango, you know you need a Nac 72, Hicap and 2xNap135.

Hi Mango -- did you do any more experimenting with your Allo DigiOne?

I have just received my third microSD card to experiment with upmpdcli -- I think [@mention:23389351206659471] runs it on his Allo Diginoe with great satisfaction. Anyway, it's great fun here experimenting and swapping the software...

Indeed, I typically run MinimServer and upmpdcli on all my devices, including the Pi + DigiOne combo. MinimServer and upmpdcli are very reliable and straightforward to install and to setup. upmpdcli also provides access to internet streaming services and to internet radio. Add a UPnP control point (Linn Kazoo, Bubble UPnP, Lumin, etc.) and you have a very competent and flexible system.

The only complaint that I have is that I am experiencing occasional track skips on long Qobuz tracks. The problem does not appear to depend on upmpdcli but on its MPD backend. It might also be a failure of certain Qobuz servers. It occurs no matter whether one uses the upmpdcli interface to Qobuz or whether one uses the interface to Qobuz of the Bubble UPnP control point and seems also to affect some Sonore devices. I have reported the issue on opensourceprojects.eu/p/upmpdcli/tickets/ and on the MPD ticket system.

As I wrote in another thread dedicated to the DigiOne, Allo are about to release a new power supply for the DigiOne. I think it is called Nirvana and should become available this summer. If the DigiOne (its Pi host) is powered by a SMPS, it is worth considering the grounding suggested by John Swenson in the "SMPS and grounding" thread on CA.

I also have a Schiit Eitr connected to the RPi that hosts the DigiOne. In the beginning I had the impression that the DigiOne was more engaging but also more tiring than the Eitr. The grounding of the ifi power supply and time seem to have reversed my preferences. I now almost only listen to my system through the DigiOne.
