Nac A5 cable solder
Posted by: Kwan on 08 June 2018
Hi all.
I just brought Naca5 cable and was trying to solder it into the pin provided, but I realized that the pin groove is too small to fit in all a5 copper.
My question is, am I brought a fake cable or the pin is not correct? Pin came together with Naim amp.
dont know how to attach a picture, otherwise it should explain more clearly.
Thank you
Kwan
Kwan you have to form the cppper strands with pliers so they fit down the slot. They should just about fit. Soldering best done on a board with holes drilled for the pins and cable strapped to the board. See the forum FAQ...

It takes quite some effort and fiddling to get those sturdy copper strands into the slot. You need to use some tongs to squeeze the strands into a „sheet“ and maybe use some screwdriver to push all strands into the slot not easy but they actually will fit. Make sure also you inmobilize the pins in some wooden board with predrilled holes. Good luck ????

???? Kwan,...If you are not good, and used to solder,..... as well as have the right equipment and the right solder-tin.
Then I suggest you let someone, who has the reputation of performing good soldering on NACA5 cables do this.
I'm good at soldering, but I still send my cables to Karl at High Fidelity in Stockholm (1000km).
Naca5 plays significantly better as Karl has performed the soldering.
Just a tip.!
/Peder ????
Thank you for quick reply.
I try it again.
Peder: I did asked a few shops, including those selling speaker cable were not keen to do soldering for me, by the way I live in China.

Oooh,... then I can not help you ????.
Send an email to Naim, they might have some suggestion for someone in China.
From memory, think, know that Karl (High Fidelity) said, you should have 350 degrees warm on the solder-tipp,... no more,no less.... this was important.!
But it depends on which solder-tin you use,so it is not easy to give advice here.
Still hope you find a solution, good luck.

See here for guidance on soldering NACA5:
I find it best to get a piece of wood, and drill two 4mm holes the same distance apart as the pins when they are in the plastic cover. Push the pins into the holes, then push in the stripped wire, ensuring that you have just the right amount of wire stripped. Solder them with a reasonably powerful iron. I like WBT silver solder, but I don't know if you can buy it in China?
There are some useful photos of good and bad soldering jobs in the forum FAQ.
I managed to solder it, not well done, let’s see what will it turn out.
thanks again for your advice.
I'd make certain it's well done. Easy enough to snip the cable, reheat the pins and remove the debris, then start again once you've cleaned up the pins and apply flux. Not sure if you're a novice to soldering but a big mistake beginners often make is to use the iron to melt the solder resulting in a crap joint. Take your time and be sure to adequately and equally heat both the pin and the cable. Once these are hot enough set the iron aside, touch the solder to the joint, and it should flow freely.
I’ve done a set recently, apart from the advice above the wires won’t all fit if they’re twisted I discovered.
Joerand, yes , I am new to soldering.
I will try the way you suggested, but to get all cable copper into the pin groove is big task.
???? Kwan,.... Fun to hear that you managed to solder your Naca5.... congratulations.
But thought of my advice, especially as you write that you are a beginner at soldering.
Send an email to Naim, and ask about any good Naim dealers in China (can also be a Linn-trader),.... who is also good at soldering.
Then let solder on your Naca5, you will not be disappointed ????.
A good soldering is of great importance musically.!!
Two examples....
◾ Lejonklou Hifi,... Fredrik is extremely good at soldering.
People from other countries send their speaker cables to Fredrik for soldering.
◾ Karl,.... High Fidelity, same thing. People send their cables so that Karl can solder them. Karl even resoldering Linn's Interconnect cables before delivery to customer,..... Yes,.. they play better after resoldering of Karl.
Both of these, have also with listening tests, listened to which solder-tin that sounds best,..... yes you read right.. ????.. It also makes a difference.
Unfortunately, these two traders are living in Sweden,..... a little far from China.
Think of,... a soldering can look good, but still play worse.!!

After few tries, not managed to get it right.
I am thinking of using Deltron gold plated plug on both end. It is much easier to get to done properly. (I have soldered speaker end). Not sure how it will affect the SQ.
I checked with the main distributor in HK, they said I can cut away portion of A5 copper, that will make it easier to fit into the slot, anyone did it before?
Thanks for your advice.
Kwan
It's not necessary to cut any cable away, you just need to use pliers to form the cable strands into alignment that fits the slot.
You do need quite a meaty soldering iron though. I use a 100w heat gun which works fine.
NACA5 is a tight fit in Naim plugs, but it does fit, and the two were designed to work together. Deltrons are also OK though. I would use the regular Nickel plated ones rather than gold, except where they will go into a gold plated socket.
I would like to try again on naim’s plug, but after many tries, those plugs are unusable now. So now I have no choice but to use Deltron plug.
You could get some more Naim SA8 speaker plugs.
I did asked retailers in China, they don’t carry any naim plug.
You should be able to clean the plug up with a solder sucker. I've reused Naim plugs before without issue doing this.
