NAC 52 benefits from Supercap DR? Yes it does!

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 08 June 2018

I rarely upgrade now, and also rarely post in this section but I thought I'd just mention my experience of a recent change. I'm not great at analytical review language!

I spotted a good value new-style Supercap 2 that had been DR'd and fancied giving it a go in my system on my old NAC 52 instead of the existing 'olive' Supercap (serviced and re-capped a few years ago).

Anyway the difference on the 52 is very, very clear. Not sure why this surprised me but I figured older kit may not get the same benefits somehow. The sound is cleaner and basslines are superbly resolved. In fact it makes 'sense' of some complex or busy passages of music that before sounded a bit muddled. Voices are fresh and natural too.

The last two changes I made to my system before were an SL interconnect and an SL 'active cable' twixt S'cap and SNAXO. In terms of absolute performance changes I'd rate the active cable the best but the other two very close.

This PS upgrade is a step on the way to a 252 but I'm fairly blown away by how good it is all sounding now. A really good 52 is a fine, fine thing you know

The whole “shall I dr or not” is going to test me in a couple of years - with 555, supercap and 300(s) to dr or not... (all will be due service then or thereabouts) Don’t quite know how I will decide as most people are positive about it as being universally an improvement but others deny that - and all anecdotal. The odds of being able to hear the effect before deciding to spend th money are pretty much zero

The DR’ing is a clear update on the olive sound. Where as the black boxes were a departure from the Naim sound.

If you're going to get something DRd, doesn't that mean you'll be going through a dealer?  Surely if so they'll let you try a demo unit first?

One way or another I'd definitely try to hear the difference first if I were you.  I tried a home demo of a 250DR against my 250.2, expecting it to be a no brainer, but just wanting to be sure.  Yet in the end I decided against.  The DR model did some things better, certainly, but (insert standard 'in my room etc' caveat) it also had an extra emphasis in the upper midrange that I couldn't get on with.

Obviously most people prefer the DR models, and so there's every chance you'll prefer them too, and there's nothing wrong with that.  But the eternal mantra of 'you must hear it for yourself' still applies.

Can the 52PS be DR’d or is too old?

Should be possible to try 555dr against my 555, and supercap dr against my supercap. 300 more difficult as I have two of them! (Though only one installed at present)

Is this suggesting that DR on an olive component  (or rather it's power supply) brings it 'closer' to the black box style/sound?

I am no expert on this but I'd have to say the effect on my 52 seems to me to be making it 'more 52' ie that lovely fresh, transparent and pacey sound. Not the characteristics I have generally thought of as being 'more black box'. I do have a 252 on the way so i will maybe update my thoughts then.

I'm not sure for now I will do any more DR upgrades. I suppose my other Scap or the 555PS are the obvious candidates (in my system source and crossover upgrades have always been the biggest steps) but the latter is pretty big outlay and I'd certainly want a demo.  The step I have just done was with a secondhand unit so I figured the outlay was modest and I could always sell it on if uimpressed. I think every box in my system is now ex-dem or secondhand actually. Maybe I am finally become a Yorskhireman.

Olive boxes cannot be DR'd

Hi Alba,

Indeed. While acknowledging the superiority of the SCDR as a quieter power supply, I just preferred the extra sense of fun that my serviced olive SC brought.  However, I fully respect how Bruce prefers the SCDR and wish him nothing but joy from it.

Best regards, FT
