RCA/Phono to RCA/Phono on a NAC 282 vs RCA/Phono to DIN

Posted by: Adam Gr on 08 June 2018

I have very recently upgraded my system and I'm currently using the Aux 2/RCA input on my NAC 282 from my turntable phono stage via an old Chord Company Chorus interconnect and in order to complete the final part of my jigsaw (for now anyway - but tell the management/wife) I was wondering the following:

1) Would there be a benefit in sound quality by using the DIN input assuming the same quality of RCA/Phono to DIN as my Chord Company Chorus (RCA/Phono to RCA/Phono)?

2) If yes to the above then why?

3) Assuming I was going to upgrade the Chord Company Chorus interconnect, what RCA/Phono to DIN cable would people recommend to match the rest of my system, as I wouldn't want this to be the weakest link - excuse the pun!

My system is: NAC282, NAP250DR, HiCap, Michell Gyro SE with SME 309 arm and Benz Micro ACE SL cartridge, Lehmann Decade phono stage, PMC Twenty5 24 speakers, and Chord Company Signature Reference speaker cable.  I also have a CD5si which I know needs to be upgraded when funds allow.

I always find the advice on this forum excellent and I look forward to your comments.

Thank you in anticipation.

Adam, it’s worth having a read of the forum FAQ, particularly the thread about why Naim prefer DIN connections for best performance.

Hi Richard

Thanks for your advice.  I have read the FAQ and I thought the post relating to why Naim prefer DIN connections related to where there are DIN terminations on both ends of the cable.  Is this not the case?

With reference to the statement that  “the two RCA connectors on either end of the cable act as reflective walls at higher frequencies and bounce information back and forth, trapping the signal and extending the decay time of the signal that is trying to pass from one component to the other.”  would this not apply if one end was DIN and the other RCA - in other words you wouldn’t get the reflection it refers to?

Recommended cables would still be appreciated from anyone reading this.

Thanks

Even just one is better than none. Listen and hear for yourself.

Adam GR, as Richard say it’s best to listen ... as much as I admire and respect my friends at Naim I am not  convinced about their explanation about reflections is really valid at audio frequencies.. yes at RF but not audio.. the point about a common ground between each channel and fewer physical connections required, as well as mechanical decoupling benefits is more on the money with respect to advantages of DIN.
