Naim Nova with ATC SCM19 or Harbeth C7 or Spendor D7

Posted by: Razuu on 11 June 2018

Hello. Just join this forum.

Thinking of buying the Nova but would like suggestions on which of the above speakers would best suit.

My room size is 4m wide and 5m deep. Music is vocals, acoustic, jazz with a little rock. Don't like bright treble, mids are the priority, bass should be there but not dominant.

Looking forward to suggestions.

Cheers

From what you are saying, I think you really have the Harbeth in mind, since it has all the attributes that matches perfectly your criteria.

You really need to demo these speakers at home in your room to compare properly. I've listened to ATC SCM19 and they are superb and should fit your requirements, worth a try.

Personally, I would try Harbeth Monitor 30.1 over C7 for a less uncoloured sound.

I've heard good things about D7 but you might want to compare this with ATC SCM40 (passive or active version) - my favourite speaker but not sure Nova would have enough juice to drive.

Thanks. Haven't heard the 30.1. The D7 are very nice suits the Nova. I am worried about the Nova (80wpc) driving the ATC properly - only 85db and a sealed box. From what I have heard the ATC is best with more power.

What you've expressed as a preference there, musical tastes, and even the room size, is spooky close to my own situation.  I nailed it well and truly a little over a year ago with Kudos X3s.  I really would urge you to add those to your list and demo if you possibly can.  They are spectacular, and I think they well be exactly what you're looking for.  That said, I've not heard any of your short list and only know what I've read, so can't really comment on those unfortunately.  I did audition other speakers before discovering the X3s, including Focal Aria 926, PMC25.23, Russell K Red100, but nothing came close to what the X3s did.  Good luck.

It's just the usual thing with speakers...

Listen to a LOT (as many as you can) in the dealers showroom, and in this price range you should listen to at least 10 different types of speaker.  This will help you eliminate most of them as they won't sound quite 'right' to you (some you'll eliminate in the first 10 minutes of listening!).  From this you can get a short list of two or three.

Then try as hard as you can to get a home demo of those.

Thanks for all the responses.

By the way, I am from Brisbane Australia, hi-fi dealers are limited and either doesn't have demo gear or refuse to let you take them home. But I will take my time and demo as many speakers with the Nova.

Cheers

Ah, OK.

Can you take the Nova and a memory stick to the dealers and get them to use that for the demo; that way you'll see how those speakers work with the Nova?
One advantage of an 'all-in-one' box is that you only have one box to carry and setup!
