NDS dropped a channel. What have I done?

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 11 June 2018

Been swapping around a 52 and 252 in my system which has involved a few power off/on cycles for everything and also moving the NDS (carefully) from the top of the stack a couple of times.

So now... no LH channel with either pre-amp in place from the NDS. Other inputs are fine.

I've checked the interconnect by swapping in an old one-same result. I have racked my brain for something simple or stupid I may have done but the only conclusion I can come to is that I have somehow annoyed or damaged the NDS. I do have a second system that I could in theory stick the player in to test it but it means a lot of dismantling to do this as I'll have to pull out a power supply etc etc, and I'm struggling to see how it may be any different.

Any suggestions before I start weeping and ringing to send it for repair? Logic tells me it must be the player but I'd hate to send it back and then discover I had missed something obvious.

Thanks in advance

Bruce

PS Never did get to do the comparison!

Have you powered down and reseated the burndy at both ends

Yes, both of them (powered from 555PS)

Does the signal actually go through the PS though??

Bruce, assuming you have checked the i/c is OK, and if you are using DIN, have you tried the other output (RCA Phono)? - remember, you'll need to switch it on first to check.

No but its all I could think of just in case a power rail hasn't engaged properly when the burndy connector has been re-connected

hmm, good idea. need to find RCA to DIN cable. Might have one somewhere. Will get back to you!

Same result. One channel only.

Any more suggestions? I don't know enough about the NDS and 555PS power supply. Does one Burndy 'feed' each channel?

In which case is it worth using a Supercap on the NDS (I have one spare as I was doing an upgrade of that too.) Would this help to clarify if it is the 555PS or one of the Burndy's perhaps?

ignore that, I have realised would have to be an XPS to power it.

Hi Bruce,

I believe that the burndies don’t feed the separate channels but rather the separate analog and digital sections of the NDS.

OK

Looks like it is the NDS then...

Within the naim app is there a balance setting

I would still try to exclude things. Do you have another source and can you exclude that it’s a problem on the amplification side. Balance setting, potentially touched, connection cables etc...

Next step check in with the dealer.......

I hope for you it’s not the worst case and that something is really broken....

A different source (AV) is fine. It is also the same with both the 52 and 252 so not a pre-amp input socket issue.

The balance setting on the app is central (never knew that was there).

I cannot see it is anything beyond the NDS now really. The first fault I will have had with any of the Naim kit I have owned in over 25yrs.

What is really odd is that I rejected my Astell + Kern portable player this week after a recurrent fault whereby it too dropped a channel. Spooky coincidence.... or maybe I have gone deaf in one ear .

Thanks for the suggestions to date. At least I have a found that I have a cable that will allow me to connect the Qute from my office system and create a bit of a mullet until the issue is sorted.
