Cisco switch model numbers, any difference?

Posted by: pixies on 15 June 2018

Thought I would see what all the fuss was about and have just bought a Cisco switch from ebay, (only £45!).  However my version is Cisco WS-C2960-8TC-S.  Most on this site refer to a version ending 8TC-L.  Is there any difference between the two?  I can’t see anything obvious on web searches and in an earlier discussion on this forum Simon In Suffolk (I think referring to a G model) made a comment that they are all pretty much the same.  If I made a schoolboy error then I can always resell it. Any one care to offer any advice?

Mmm.... everyone must be watching the football, even Simon In Suffolk!

Lol I only play football never watch it.

Nowadays most who play football can't play for toffee ????‍♂️

Well sadly my best playing days are behind me so I now dwell on hifi switches and watching a bit of footie!

Scroll to the bottom.

I will try and remember my model.

Ok I originally had a used Cisco WS 2960 8 TC L, then bought a brand new Cisco WS 2960 8 TC S.

you have ordered the good one.  For Simon in the Suffolk, 8tc l or 8tc s make no difference for sound. they are both cisco catalyst 2960 8tc....

I’ve always understood that the L is a higher specification.

Posted on: 15 June 2018 by French Rooster

simon will certainly respond to that.  You should be right for L as higher spec, but for sound quality i feel to remember that there was no differences....

Simon advised me to get the L. Which is what I did. Plugged it in and forgot about it.

The L is the LAN Base  and the S is the LAN Lite model.. they are essentially  pretty much the same, but the L has more capacity, functionality  and back plane throughput... probably irrelevant for most home networks. I have used the L version hence why I recommended.

have the L too.

Ok thanks again everyone. Looks like what I have ordered will do the job. Looking forward to trying it out.

I have a brand new S. The missing features compare to the L seemed irrelevant given it's only got one device plugged in to it.

This gives quite a good summary of what the various model numbers mean:

Probably a bit late if you’ve already ordered one, but at least you’ll know what you’re getting!

That confuses me a bit, you need at least 2 devices plugged in for a switch to do anything.

But yes for home networking s or L is almost certainly irrelevant (unless you're really pushing the limits of what you can do in a more complex home network).

Sorry, should have been clearer - one device (NDS), and the fibre uplink to the main switch in the loft where everything else is connected.
