Nac 82 problem
Posted by: mrowkoob on 16 June 2018
I just traded my nac 62/nap 90 combo for a nac 82 / nap 180 recently refurbished by Witch Hat.
When setting up the system at home. The nap 180 powers up. The Naps powers on. Green light and heats up. The nac 82 however is stone dead.
All cables are connected correctly. My snaic is the one from my old system. I will try to replace it but if that is not the solution what could be the problem?
If no HiCap is the link plug in place
My first thought was the link plugs too - both should be in place if you are powering it from the 180.
Without a Hicap or even 2 Hicaps or Supercap, you will need to have both Upgrade link plugs fitted - the paddle link and the regular link plug.
Below is an image I found on the net showing the two link plugs that should be fitted when not using an upgrade power supply.
Is the NAPSC plugged in? If it is then the logo and buttons should be lit.
The NAPSC is plugged in, it´s warm and the light on the NAPSC is on. No logo or buttons on the NAC82 are lit. Link plugs are in place.
Is there a fuse in the NAPSC that could be blown even if the light is on and it´s warm?
check the NAPSC.
Edit - apologies - just read your post where you said it was on and the light glowing.
Is that a proper SNAIC4 in your picture?
Otherwise it's time to contact the company who "refurbished" the NAP180 and NAC82 for their advice.
Still worth checking the NAPSC output with a multimeter. Should be 16+ volts.
Thank you Richard. I think I´ll need to take it to a pro. If the NAPSC is not working I wonder why the light is on and it´ s heating up. There is a fuse in the NASPC when I google pictures of it but I assume if the fuse is blown the NASPC would not heat up or have it´s light on?
Edit. Just read your reply Richard. The Snaic is not from Naim. Worked fine with my Nac62/Nap90 combo. But if it´s the Snaic would the NAC82 still be lit by the NASPC?
Yes, if the internal fuse was blown it would not power up.
It may be worthwhile having someone qualified look over the NAC82. You could open up the NAC82 and see whether all is OK inside. If it was shipped then something may have come loose - maybe the phono boards, if they weren't properly seated. Check if the logic board connectors are properly seated (please use an ESD strap when the unit is open).
It could simply be a broken connection in the NAPSC output plug - check the voltage.
Agree with Richard - the SNAIC doesn't look quite right for a genuine one.

The NAPSC should light the 82 without the SNAIC plugged in.
Thank you both for your replies. I´ll let my local specialist check it out.
It was an easy fix and I´m up and running. Now just waiting for the release of the ND5 XS2... again thank you for your replies.
What was the issue?
Apparently the NAPSC cable had been forcibly inserted into the NAC invertedly by 180 degrees. That was also the reason the NAPSC became so warm. Caused some red ears at the local dealers who delivered it that way. But all good now. The new combo needed at surprising amount of time to heat up and run perfectly compared to my earlier naim units (nait and the Nac62/nap90) but after being on for a good 12 hours the sound that I was hoping for was there.
Wow, I didn't know that was even possible! Thanks, and glad all now working well.
Crikey! It must have took some force to do that.
