Editing Metadata.

I've just completed ripping the new Wilko Johnson CD, which is coming up as "unknown" album and artist.

Although I've managed to edit the track details, nServe on both my iPad and MacBook Pro reports that it has been unable to edit the album and artist titles.

Any ideas chaps?

Wait a while and you'll be able to edit it.
Whilest the n-Serve is creating Mp3 versions, or transcoding to FLAC from WAV (if you have that enabled) you can't edit much.
Once it's finished, you'll be able to edit.

Oh, and once edited, the Mp3 version will also automatically be edited too.

Possibly, as Blythe says, the album is still being converted, or you are playing it? I don’t ever recall seeing a message though, if I’ve tried to edit anything too soon the changes just revert.

Typically an edit is possible after around 15 minutes or so. Especially if MP3 copies are being made...

Still not behaving, I'm afraid.

I'll delete it and try re-ripping.

Hmmm... after 3 hours it should be fine..

Before you do that... could you try editing an old album, just to see if the process works?

Hi Adam

Good thinking ............ tried your idea, and I'm able to edit old albums ok.

Bit of a mystery.

Hi Dave

Have you, by any chance, ripped a number of CDs in sequence? If so, the MP3 encoding process can literally take hours. And this could block any metadata editing on the recent rips.

Otherwise - I have no idea why a single CD would be so stubborn. It would imply that the US is processing a large amount of data.

Is there a chance you could check the system log for messages?

Adam

I see you use a MacBook - nServe is the one you’d need.

Go to SYSTEM and check the log messages for signs of unusual activity.

I'm not sure whether there's any connection, but, whenever I have trouble ripping a CD, I've found that burning a CD-Rom copy invariably rips with no problems.

Doing this, I see that the album tracks are listed in Japanese characters, and, indeed, when the original CD is placed in my external drive, the same thing occurs.

I've tried editing the metadata in nServe on both my iPad and on my MacBook, but no joy.

Anyway, it's on it's way back to Amazon for a refund, and I'll buy it again from another source.

The fun just never stops.

Could you use a metadata editor to strip all tags from the album, to get rid of the Japanese characters, then start again?

A step too far for me, I fear, with my limited computery skillset.

I've had a look at the desktop client, as suggested by Adam, above, but that doesn't reveal anything unusual.

Line of least resistance, I'm afraid, and the CD will be winging it's way back to Amazon tomorrow.

I'll replace it from another source, and try ripping that one, with fingers firmly crossed.

Its available as a download from Qobuz,  that'll avoid any ripping complications.

... and if you’re really lucky, you might even get some metadata with it!

Guess I'll make do with Tidal, until the replacement turns up.

As an aside, the track listings, (in Japanese), were all over the place, with track 12 showing as track 1 .......... makes one wonder where The River are sourcing their CD's these days.
