NAC 52 problem

Posted by: mlauner on 20 June 2018

While cleaning shelves containing my active system, I left one of my Nap 250s on by mistake and powered up the supercap. Heard a loud crack[not a thump] thru the speakers. Now I have a low very muffled sound and volume control does not work on my Nac 52. I think I may have serious damage but was hoping somebody could diagnose the problem. My source is a CDS3 and everything sounded great before I started monkeying around, Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions from the Naim collective.

Have you tried shutting down and start again in the correct order.

ML, it's very hard to diagnose from the description.  However, I would advise checking through all connections with power off and then powering up again.

Hi ML,

You have my sympathy. I am sure you are more self controlled than me, in my case this would have lead to a forceable flow of invective!

Unfortunately same result after plugging and unplugging again. Is it possible that a blown fuse in either supercap or Nac 52 could be the cause? Would both pieces light up with fuse knackered? My old CDX would not light up with blow fuse but unsure about supercap. Thanks.

When the fuse blows, there should be no power to any part of the unit.

Thanks Richard, That is what I assumed. Must be a more serious issue with the NAC 52.

I don’t see how leaving an amp on would cause an issue when powering on the 52 SuperCap. You mention active, 2-4/242 or 3-6/363?

Which 250 was left on - high or low freq?

was the SNAXO power supply on when you turned he 52 SuperCap on ?

Have you checked the 52 Burndy ? I had a similar problem with mine and it was a loose Burndy.

I assume the problem is on all source inputs ?

I am also assuming no other cables where disconnected ? Like XLR’s or speaker cables ?

Rob,

Thanks for your response. Mid range amp was on and I hit the supercap switch. I have snaxo 3-6-2. All connections were tight but burndy does have exposed wires on supercap end. I will see if I can thread back thru and re-tighten. Sound is very muffled thru CD. I unplugged all other sources while cleaning.  Definitely a dumb move on my part!

I  seem to recall a similar issue with my then active 52/SBL system a long time ago -- a toddler switched my 52/supercap off, and then on again. this killed the sound and fortunately that time, only the 52/supercap itself was affected. I am not suggesting that this is the same issue for you -- but just thought i'd share.

no prize though for guessing who the 'toddler' was...

enjoy

I only have my self to blame for this gaffe Ken. I may buy a grey burndy off flea bay to substitute for the black one. Hopefully it can be repaired by Plurison.
