Uniti Core invisible to other media players

Posted by: Paulie on 21 June 2018

I have a UnitiCore (running firmware 2.5 (9144) which had, until very recently, been discoverable by three televisions (Bang & Olufsen) and were able to play (via their own built in media players) music off of the Uniti. All of the devices are on the same wifi network in my home and the playback off the Core was via that wifi network. Nothing hardwired. Suddenly, the player is no longer visible to the televisions. I've tried numerous restarts, reboots, unplugs..... the whole kit..... and still, no love. The one thing I haven't been able to try is to disconnect (sign out) the Core from the wifi network and then have it rejoin (sign in again).  I've unplugged the LAN cable from the unit and waited and plugged it back in, but that's not the same thing.....

Any help, as always, most appreciated.

I'm assuming you have it hard wired to a streamer or something as there's no WiFi in the Core. My guess is that your network is the problem. Try turning off all the network electronics, router, network switch if fitted, streamer and Core. Also telly etc. Disconnect network cables from Core, streamer and switch. Reconnect electrical supply in the reverse order, ie router, switch, streamer and Core, waiting a few minutes to allow each component to fully reboot, this is especially important for the router. When the router and network switch have booted connect the network lead between router and switch. Next boot streamer and Core, again waiting for a few minutes for them to initialize before connecting the network cables. Set up the Core etc using the app. If it's not recognised by the app add manually. If still not working reset the Core by disconnecting from mains, holding in the power button as you re-establish the power, I think that's correct but you may want to check that by looking at the Naim Core instructions online. It's been a long time since I've had to reboot the Core, resetting the network usually works and I've only had to do that after a power outage. Which makes me ask, have you recently had a power outage? Hope this helps. As a last resort phone Naim Uniti support, they are very good. Rich

If you have powered off and repowered everything ... then there are some things to try...

if you know how to use ping... try typing ‘ping 239.255.255.250’ from a console on a mac or pc connected to your home lan... what do you see? Do you see the IP address of your Core returned along with TV IP addresses?

if you see the Core address returned, the chances are your home network is fine.

If not, or this means nothing to you... the next thing to check is to see if your WLAN access point (perhaps on your home router) has a setting called ‘IGMP snooping’. If it does try disabling it... repeat the ping check above or simply try to discover your Core again.

Sometimes this IGMP snooping capability can trip up on consumer equipment and your TVs might have caused this to happen. Ideally you want this enabled for optimum Wifi performance, but if not working properly then switch it off.

Failing that you should try an alternate WLAN access point, like a Ubiquiti AP or an Apple Airport Express and connect to a switchport on your home router.

I like Simon's reply, I'll be keeping a note of this for when I get a smart TV etc and have issues. Rich

You can reboot a Core by disconnecting the mains and then plugging it in again a few seconds (say 20) later. If you want to reset a Core to factory settings, then you disconnect the mains, wait 20 secs, hold down the standby button while reconnecting the mains and keep the standby button pressed in until the light by the front panel USB socket flashes, then let go the button and let it finish starting up as normal.

Resetting to factory settings doesn't lose the music on the internal disc but does lose any playlists, although you could restore those from a backup if you have one.

Paulie, did you get it sorted? If so what did you do? Rich
