Vinyl record anti-static cleaning brush?

Posted by: wenger2015 on 23 June 2018

Suggestions appreciated for a first class Record cleaning anti-static Brush.

Back in the day (before cd’s) I used one that was purchased from WHSmith, cheap and cheerful and seemed to do the job.

I have a very similar one now, from the cheap and cheerful range,

Have things moved on? Just how important is the quality of the brush?

I don’t mind how much it costs, just looking for a tried and tested recommendation.

Richard, thanks again for another snippet. “Scrubbing to get a foamy lather”, I was being too gentle! There is a definite knack to this record cleaning malarkey but I am getting really good results now.

Cheers,

Stu

Yes, a lot of excellent advice on this thread.

I have just managed to negotiate a good deal on a project VCS mk2 with lid, so looking forward to putting into practice all the great suggestions.

I use the zapper and recently bought a Roksan record cleaning pad. Really well made and does the job well. Not cheap but very effective.

i also have a VPI record cleaning machine which does an excellent job - also on new pressings.

Project VCS mk2 has arrived today....interesting to find out just how good the build quality is, and how good it works, hopefully be able to unpack it this evening...

Just in process of setting up, must say the build quality is very good.

Given the high cost of other RCMs it really is excellent value. As hinted at above it has taken me a while to get good results. Records always looked spotless but tended to add a little surface noise after cleaning. The advice about using medical grade water rather than ionised was the big one for me. And I now even find the process therapeutic...

I was going to use ionised water myself but have now ordered the medical grade water as recommended.... so no vinyl cleaning for me until it arrives .... now if it’s therapeutic that’s an unexpected bonus.

Medical Grade does seem to make a difference, even more important is the advice to scrub to make a lather. My natural caution lead me to be too gentle, only ever applying light pressure and at an acute angle to the oncoming record surface and with quite light pressure. Doesn’t do the job. Give it a press, roll it a bit from inner grooves to outer grooves and don’t  be afraid to angle the brush into the direction of travel. You will get a few bubbles and a little bit of lather. Then you are doing it right. I washed my green label RCA Bowie, Ziggy first time in a gentle fashion. It was better than unwashed, but a second wash with medical grade water and appropriate scrub action eliminated virtually all noise and brought the disc to life properly. Really valuable advice from Richard.

To remove completely the static on a vinyl, I use a ultrasonic bath with attachment to hold and turn  2-3 or 12 vinyls in the solution

I  now use distilled water for my iron. Having spent a lot of money seemingly buying the best of each manufacturers' irons, they all fail within 3-5 years. Some definitely related to impure water. Our water isn't even that hard and we use a water filter.

Storing the water is a problem. Keep it out of light. As the container empties and each time you open the cap, air goes in and contaminates the water. Roughly it will last about a year if you look after it well. I buy a 20l container which allows me to put a tap cap on. This means I don't have to remove the cap to use the water and hence it stays pure longer.

The best produced distilled water is filtered first and then distilled. Don't accept anything less, no matter what people like to call it.
