Joy Division Broke my CDS3
Posted by: Ghettoyout on 25 June 2018
I was playing a Joy Division Greatest Hits type CD and after playing the song 24 Hours, the played ceased to work correctly. It will read a cd and know how many tracks there are but if you try to play one nothing much happens. I've tried other CDs (Melt Banana, Smiths etc.) but get the same result. I've powered it off and on but it still will not play a disk.
Does anyone know if there are any other quick fixes I can try? It looks like it may have to go back to the factory for repair otherwise. Can a CDS3 still be repaired/serviced and if so what sort of cost am I looking at?
Thank you for your help.
Best etc.,

Maybe worth giving Naim service an E-mail for an accurate confirmation. My CD5si did something similar once, I held down the 'stop' button continuously while turning off, left it for 5 minutes and then held the 'stop' button continuously pressed again when turning back on for about 10 seconds, did the trick in my situation. Not sure if this will help but maybe worth a try?
Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a go.
You could try running it in "soak mode" for a bit. It's handy for seeing whether the mech is throwing up errors. Put in a nice clean scratch free disc that you know plays well. Switch off. Then switch on while pressing and holding play. This puts it in to a special diagnostic mode without error correction. If the mech starts to read the disc then it should keep flashing 0. However, if it reads yet starts counting, then it's finding errors and may indicate a faulty mech. And if it doesn't read at all... time to contact service.
Otherwise, if it read the TOC Ok but doesn't go any further it may be worth checking the laser sled ribbon - it may be stuck. Not so easy to see though and maybe worth getting an experienced tech involved as the suspended tray is easily upset and things damaged or made worse.
If all else fails return it to Factory.
Mine had a new mech and service roughly this time last year. So it's easily doable.
Thank you for your advice Richard - I'll try it this evening.
Christopher - after the new mech and service was there any difference in sound quality? I won't ask how much it cost, but you can say if you like.
Let's just say that when it came back I was experiencing Unknown Pleasures.
The cost was very reasonable. I can't remember exactly what it was but I do remember it was a flat fee for whatever needed doing. I'd email Naim for the cost.
So this is Permanent.
Might be worth having a look at the players Isolation.
When it played up there was certainly a change of speed, a change of style. I did have regrets though.
The old girl has certainly lost control. I'll have to see if running it in soak mode reveals the secrets of her past.
A couple of years ago my CDS3 started to play up. It would not play but track numbers were appearing on the screen.
Believe it or believe it not this was corrected when I put new batteries in my remote control and the machine has not done this since.
A man from Naim told me that this has happened before.
Interesting. I have been pressing the buttons on the machine itself as well as the remote control with the same results.
I tried running it in the so-called soak mode last night. The much talked about flashing zero came up (just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.
Destiny unfolded, I watched it slip away) as little else happened. I was hoping for something more, hoping for something else.
Looks like it has to go back to the factory.
I can well imagine large parts of this thread have baffled the prog rockers amongst us.

I have a feeling that low battery power can cause remotes to send errant signals, which serve to confuse Naim kit or something like a Sky remote interferes.
I'm sure this arises with my Flash remote every now and again with my CDP and pre. One thing I check on a regular basis is the output formatting on the CDP i.e. DIN-only, as there was a time when it liked to change unprompted to DIN & phono together.
Oh dear, it does seem to be suffering from a degree of disorder. Let’s hope a fix takes nearer to twenty four hours, rather than decades.

It's only the remote, Nigel, she's lost control.
Thank you for that insight HH. I'm a lost soul without my player. Like being in a wilderness. The atmosphere has gone.
And all on a dreaded sunny day.
Hopefully Keats and Yeats are on your side.
A CDS3 is a wonderful thing, far more than A Means To An End. What's the latest on how the Disorder will be remedied?
CDS3 + 555PS = Bliss !
I love this thread....40 years on and their music is still relevant and revered.
Seeing them live in 79 at Bangor University was probably my best gig, other than The Smiths in 83, at Leicester Poly. Retrospection is a wonderful thing.

The player will be taken to my dealer on Friday to go back to Naim for repair/service. It's a 2003 model with a 555 PS added in 2012. The service cost has been quoted at £355 with £24 shipping but if it needs a new mechanism I'm sure it will be more.
Sadly I've run out of Joy Division lyrics for the moment. Sorry about that. They were one of the finest bands we have seen though. In the mean time it'll just have to be the radio, live transmission.
