Rega Planar 3 query

Posted by: Mercky on 25 June 2018

I recently 'inherited' an RP 3, it's about 20 years old I'd say but in fairly good nick bar a few faults - I notice the pulley on the motor side (where you change the speed) is slipping on the motor spindle, I gather this came originally as part of the motor assembly so should it be bonded to the spindle somehow? Can I just 'glue' it back on as such? You'd expect there to be a flat side on the spindle where it would key in to the pulley but this doesent seem to be the case.

you had better bought a good second hand RP3 from 2013-2016. The original Planar 3 has bad pitch stability and other kind of nasties.

I think it was an interference fit but they can come loose with age.  Best contact Rega for further advice.  It could be a good excuse to do a 24V motor upgrade if it's the earlier model.

I did the motor upgrade on my 2000-ish Planar 3, replacing the original one in the sling with the more positively mounted (sticky-pad?) version.  Excellent results!

Just had my 1982 RP3 upgraded with external power source. Sublime

IIRC mine is a push fit. It's in the loft so I can't check.

As stated above, Rega are your friends. They'll be happy to help.

I used to have a Rega Planar 3, do they still give a life time guarantee on their turntables ? Except for things that wear out like the belt and stylus etc ?

The motor as supplied is perfectly adaquate as standard

Yes the pulley CAN just be put back on with a tiny drop of super glue or bearing fix

If you need to remove it again in the future you can just warm it up a little to release it

These are great decks if you accept them for what they are ..the 240v motor can also be stuck to the plinth with double sided foam pads if the "rubber band" is past it ...or buy another band.
