From a very very black cloud to a glimmer of a silver lining

Recently - my mother in law passed away suddenly (yes I know .... this puts me in line for mother in law jokes) we were however, pretty close ...she lived with us for 15 years and was a great character - sadly missed. The house now feels very strange - with a very empty feel. Anyway things move on and my wife and I had to clear her room - which was a horrid task. She had a load of swish gear - 55 inch HD TV, media boxes, phones etc etc - which have now been disconnected and removed. Anyway - the long and short of all this was .... - when I cranked up my system again - low and behold my long standing NAP500 transformer hum - has completely cleared.... its like a little gift...........

What if it hadn't been the gear but the mother-in-law? When mine drops in unexpectedly for a cup of coffee, it's not my Supernait that starts to hum, it's me.

(Sorry if I sound cynical, but the mere fact that you posted this proves a hint of cynicism on your part too...

I had a similar loss recently, though in a different house. My step-mother to whom we'd become quite close since my father died, herself died suddenly over Easter. She did make a good cake. The inevitable house clearance revealed the 1940s HMV gramophone which my father (probably) had for his 21st birthday or near it. Not a horn, but the large disc-shaped headshell and amplified box, in British racing green. I now need to get it working (spring issues - any ideas?) to see if hifi has indeed improved in 70 years....
