Best Music Streaming App for Rpi?
Posted by: ROOG on 29 June 2018
I have just recently bought a Raspberry Pi + an Allo Digione SPDIF board to try and I have set it up running with Volumio. I have it running through my Audionote DAC and have tried it fed into the digital input of my SU and it gives good results. But I was wondering whether you, the knowledgeable people of this forum, have tried other systems/programs and whether you have found the optimum Rpi music streamer solution?
I would like to try Roon, but that will have to wait until funds allow for the cost of Roon and a Nuc to host it.
I run MinimServer and upmpdcli (a UPnP renderer that uses MPD as a backend) on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ hosting a DigiOne. The music library is stored in a 1TB USB drive connected to the Pi. The DigiOne is connected to a Naim DAC via DC1. The OS is a minimal Raspbian installation and the system is only accessible via ssh. I use rsync for file transfers to and from the Pi.
There is also Rune Audio, if you run Roon (not to be confused with Rune) then you can use Ropieee or dietpi os with Roon bridge installed.
Moode audio is also very good but a real PITA to set up because you have to download the source files and compile it yourself. Moode, Rune and Volumio are all related, being based on the same original code, so they have a similar look and feel.
Another one to look at is PiCorePlayer.
FWIW, my four RPi run with different HATs, are both wired and wireless pulling the data over the network from a twin disk (mirrored) Synology NAS, and are loaded with Moode
Thanks everyone, I see from Suzy's post that there might be little to be gained from other streamers is they are based on similar code?
Volumio was fairly easy for me to set up and only gets in to trouble if i forget to close it down properly, operator error!
One thing I miss is access to TIDAL through the Rpi, does anyone know if it is possible to access TIDAL via a Rpi?

Sure! If you use upmpdcli, it comes with interfaces to Tidal, Qobuz and Google Music. If you use the BubbleUPnP control point or the Lumin control point you can get access to Tidal, Qobuz, etc. via interfaces made available by the control point. Alternatively, you can install BubbleUPnP Server (not the BubbleUPnP control point!) on your RPi (or on any other computer on the LAN) to get access to Tidal, Qobuz, etc. via a proxy media server. Thus, you have three different ways to access Tidal. The easiest one is using the BubbleUPnP control point app. This is only available in Android, however. There is no BubbleUPnP control point for iOS.
I would stick with Volumio. It gets regular updates and does have some nice plug-ins (recently a Radio Paradise one with access to the FLAC stream, and a useful Spotify Connect one). I believe it is possible to get TIDAL streaming but I have not done this ... Google can help ;-)
Yes you can get Tidal on the PI via upnp. You can do it a few ways. Have Bubbleupnp server running somewhere, i think you can run it on the pi and create an openhome renderer of any upnp client so Volumio is one and then use Linn Kazoo app to strem it to Volumio or you can use upmpdcli to do a similar thing.

Thank you Simon, I can see that I have some reading to do here. I shall see where i get.
Its a pity that they don't have a plug in for Volumio.
I have tried a lot of things on raspberry and all in all I find volumio the best bet in terms of ease of use and stability. It also has an x86 version which is nice. I have a spare dell which is quiet and with 8gigs of ram and i5 processor obviously a fair clip faster than a pi, however the x86 does not have all the plugins.

Volumio is certainly the most user-friendly of the three, and would be my recommendation for a “first foray into streaming with a RPi”. But as ever, YMMV
For sure, it clearly demonstrates that playing a ripped CD via my Musical Fidelity V-DAC II is not as good as playing the CD itself via my CDX-XPS!
Warning, warning Will Robinson.......DAC upgrade needed.
Cheers all,
i need to get my head around tthe Rpi and perhaps try the tidal access route.
