Normally it goes into Network Sleep after a preset time which means you can see it on the network and it can play music. If you want to rip a CD, you have to fully wake it by touching the standby button. If you hold the standby button for a second or so, it goes into deep sleep and you have to wake it before you can do anything with it.
i know that isn't what you asked, but in answer to your question there is no disadvantage to it being in network sleep all the time if you have an SSD. But if you have a HDD then you would notice that the disc spins 24/7 and the whole thing gets quite warm.
I also have an SSD and I leave mine in network sleep all the time. You could leave it fully powered up all the time but I don't know why you would want to?
