Hope someone can help me obtain some acoustic foam for these superb speakers. The black foam inside the woofer section has perished and turned to dust. Spoken with Naim and they haven't got any and aren't sure where I could obtain some. Apparently deterioration of this foam is common so hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction.
Did you manage to get the spec of the foam when you spoke with someone at Naim? Failing that, look up Acoustic foam (flat sheet). You will need to cut it to size and apply it to the interior yourself.
Hi Richard, thanks for the response. When I spoke with 'support' at Naim they said, "It is a very unique type of foam so it can be quite tricky to source." Thereafter said that they couldn't help in sourcing any.
I've retained a small portion that hasn't perished. It's 14mm thick, quite dense black foam. It's different to the type used for foam grills (open cell structure). My research so far has indicated foam speaker grill suppliers and air filter foam. The latter seems best so far. No harm in buying a small amount and experimenting.
Air filter foam has an open structure to pass the air but trap dust. If I understand correctly and the foam is for reduction of sound reflections inside the cabinet it may be quite different. If Naim doesnt come up with any guidance I suggest trying any or all of these: Falcon Acoustics - a limited range of damping waterials, but very helful and can make good suggestions if you ask, HiFi Collective - I’ve less experience of them, but they carry a range, Wilmslow Audio - fairly basic, but worth checking, Monacor - not in UK, good range but last time I tried the website was a pain, and indeed the likes of RS Components, does a range of acoustic absorbent materials.
A call to Cymbiosis might be worth a try. They have sourced the grill foam for DBL etc with the help of Naim. Perhaps they might get more help from Naim for you.
If it is the same as the SBL then I could point you in the right direction but I'm not sure I'm allowed to. Paul Stevenson managed to give me the specification and the drawing after a few mistakes for the dimensions to cut them . The specs for the foam is - !2.7mm or 1/2" thick reticulated polyurethane foam of 80ppi. Whether I could send a copy of the drawing to Richard who could put it on faq or send it to you direct and maybe the name of the firm that supplied mine. There must be many pairs of SBL's with crumbled foam behind the bass/mid unit, and it falls into the port between the top and bottom boxes. Hope this helps
Thanks for suggestions. Contact made with Falcon and Cymbiosis who are looking in to it.
Tony Looks like it's the same foam. Any help would be appreciated.

Tony, sure thing, send it to me and I'll post it up in the FAQ.

Mine is off white and thankfully very intact. Have Naim got any of that which you could have?
Spoke with Naim and they don't have any and don't know where to source it.
Apologies, mine is black foam in the woofer box too. Off-white in the lower box.

Richard, Did you get the drawing and the supplier ok
Tony
Tony, not yet. If you sent it to me via Naim then they will send it on to me in due course.
Hi
Is there an update on the availability of information about the source of the foam please?
D
Have you tried Wilmslow Audio?
Yes tried Wilmslow but tonyi thinks that he has details of source and has passed them to Richard
Thanks to Tonyi for passing on the info.
From what we can make out in the drawings, the foam is 12.7mm or ½” thick reticulated polyurethane 80ppi.
Tony has mentioned Pure Sound in Plymouth as a possible source.
Richard. This drawing is for the SBL I don't know if the box on the Allaes are the same.
Thank you everyone.
Hello DROOM,
Have you tried phoning Guy at Puresound, He's near Plymouth at Tavistock
Hi
I've drawn a blank with locating a supplier of this foam in the UK. This is after enquiries with at least a dozen specialists including those mentioned on this thread. Thanks for your input. It is available from India and China if I buy sheets and sheets of the stuff but I was rather hoping that someone may know of a source closer to home who would be prepared to sell a single sheet.
Is there not a way that you could import the smallest quantity and then sell on the surplus on eBay for other Naimees, just a thought?
Need to buy 100's of sheets
That’s a pain to say the least
I’ve just found a company called acoustafoam dot com, which has all sorts of foams of 80ppi and you can buy single sheets - 12mm thick and a couple of square metres in size cost about £35. Look them up and give them a call.
