Uniti Core Questions

Posted by: pixies on 12 July 2018

I am demoing a Uniti Core for a few days.  Set up all looks straight forward and will use my existing Synology NAS for back up if I decide to go for it. I have looked through the online set up guide and FAQ’s but still have a couple of questions to those who currently use one:

For demo purposes I will connect a portable hard drive that I use to back up all my current music.  Will this be ok or will the core try to format it and wipe all the music?

Longer term I would take one of the spare Western Digital Green 2TB HDD from my Synology (currently used to mirror the first one) and place this in the core.  Is this a recommended drive?

I often download albums from Qobuz (download as WAV and edit metadata via dbpoweramp). How would I get these files that download to my MacBook to the hard drive of the core? Would I have to copy to a USB and then insert it into the core to transfer the files?

My hi fi has a dedicated mains in my music room.  Should I plug the core into this or keep it away from this circuit?

All my current music is in flac (I currently use Minimserve and transcode flac to WAV on the fly).  Am I ok to continue to copy my music to flac going forward? (don’t want to have mixed files in my music folder).

Thanks that’s it for now.

Longer term I would take one of the spare Western Digital Green 2TB HDD from my Synology (currently used to mirror the first one) and place this in the core.  Is this a recommended drive? Naim recommends the Seagate Pipeline/Video 2TB hard disks (HDD) or the Samsung 850 EVO 512GB/1TB solid state drive (SSD)

Would I have to copy to a USB and then insert it into the core to transfer the files? No, you can approach the Uniti Core's download folder and copy or move your music there easlily.

My hi fi has a dedicated mains in my music room.  Should I plug the core into this or keep it away from this circuit? Good one, maybe someone might step in here

All my current music is in flac (I currently use Minimserve and transcode flac to WAV on the fly).  Am I ok to continue to copy my music to flac going forward? (don’t want to have mixed files in my music folder). FLAC will be working fine, however - unlike the HDX or Uniti Serve - the Core is not able to transcode FLAC to WAV on the fly ... maybe a future update might change this ...

Many regards,

Michel

On your first question, to expand on Michel's answer, you won't be able to use that drive as a Music Store for rips made by the Core if it already has files on it, because when you set a drive to be a Music Store (rather than a Music Share), the Core will indeed ask to format it. In order to let the Core see your portable drive and offer the music on it via the app, you will need to define it as a Music Share and in that situation, the Core will not want to format it.

Naim recommend that WD Green drives are not used because of their power saving features conflicting with the Core’s operating method.  If you search the forum you’ll find this - I can’t remember off the top of my head where it is  I think it was one of Richard Dane’s posts.

Thanks for the replies. All most helpful as usual.

I have found that the sound coming out of a DAC fed by UnitiCore in my system has benefited greatly from changing the standard power cable with a better one (in my case PowerLine).

I think I would just let your Core use the music folder on your Synology NAS as a music share for testing the Core. If you buy one, get a drive suited to the Core, and copy the music from your NAS and elsewhere to the Core downloads folder.

Any future downloads go into the same downloads folder, but edit them on your computer as you do now. If you rip CDs, they are saved to a different folder and can be edited on the Core.

CHRISSU, that has been my exact intention, however I have been unable to get the core to find/recognise my synology NAS. Only had chance to initially set up things last night and got music playing from a portable HD but not my NAS. Any tips?

I found this essay very helpful:

Thanks Thorsten. I will check it out when I am home but looks like the answer.

I believe that rather old document is only really relevant to the previous generation of Naim servers, not the Core. Did you enable network scanning in the Core settings menu?

I have generally being having a disappointing experience with the core so far. Managed to get it playing from a portable drive but couldn’t connect to my music on my NAS. Put a call in to Naim help line and they said they have just had same experience with their NAS connection and suggested a reset could resolve it as it was a known glitch. Unfortunately having done the reset I am now unable to get any connection to the core. It’s getting stuck on a checking for latest update then giving a failed connection notification! All now unplugged as I’ve had enough for tonight.

I feel that Naim has to improve the network connectivity and security on the Core. So far my experience has been good on the music side but horrendous in the network side.

It’s ridiculous in this day and age that the Core accepts Guest connections into its library via the network with no password required and it expects the NAS to have guest account enabled in order to connect to it.

I’ve given up on backing up via network as I didn’t want to expose my NAS to security vulnerabilities.

Come on Naim, I’m sure you can make the Core a proper network device in future firmware updates.

It seems like they forgot about the Core for a while.Hopefully after the new Network players are released, they can get back on solving some of the issues people are reporting with the Core.David mentioned an upcoming update (He is a Beta tester),and I believe someone mentioned on the fly transcoding from FLAC to WAV might be in the works.Internet Radio would be icing on the cake for me.

The good news is it all seems to be working ok. Not sure what sorted it, maybe just all needed turning off and a fresh approach this morning. Anyway I can now play from the internal drive as well as import some of my own music which I am copying across from a USB.  Still won't find my NAS but oh well!

Have you been in touch with Naim support on this? If anyone can fix it, Phil can. Naim were working on Core discovery of network shares recently, although I’m not sure if any fixes have been released yet.

Pixies, definitely do please get in touch with Naim support on this.

Yes I have spoken to naim support this morning and in fact that’s when things started working (before the support guy could make any suggestions) He did say there was a known issue re connecting to NAS and a fix was in progress.

Also can’t establish connection to my Mac (via finder) can see the core but can’t make a connection. Will call support again later.

Yes they are working on it but the fixes aren't released yet.
