Not going to be DAB MODULE for the Uniti.

Posted by: Proterra on 17 July 2018

When I bought my Star I was told that there was going to be DAB module available late summer. Now like our government Naim have done a U turn, see email below,

Thank you for your email - at Naim, our mission is to provide customers with only the highest quality products with leading sound quality and features. On occasion is is necessary to de-prioritise features to balance resources, and with our current release schedule we have taken the decision to remove the FM/DAB module form the 2018 build plan.

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences caused and we would like to thank you for your cooperation and loyalty to Naim.

Don't get me wrong Internet radio is OK but I occasionally get drop outs. Whereas  I already have  DAB aerial on the roof that wouldn't give me that problem.

I guess that means they will release it next year. They just say not in 2018 rather than not ever.

The absence of a FM/DAB module is a main reason why I haven't bought a Nova to upgrade from my SuperUniti. But presumably most customers don't care that much.

Still pretty poor from Naim....I would have hoped they would have put a priority on promises  to previous customers before a new launch.......and then they will have more customers with problems. No learning curve?

It was always odd that it wasn’t available from the off. My 272 is an early one and I had the FM module fitted. I’m not worried about dab because it sounds like crap and internet radio is far better. The FM is pretty good though, especially for £300.

The whole Uniti launch has been pretty abysmal, with new problems seeming to arise quicker than existing ones being resolved. A Core that still cannot transcode? Really?

Internet radio is where its at.

If you are getting drop outs, either plug the unit directly into your router with a cat5, or upgrade your internet.

My Internet speed is fibre at  70Mbs and it is hard wired to the router.  Never have any problems with Spotify, or streaming TV.

I was also going to upgrade my Superuniti to Nova on release of the FM/DAB module. Not sure if it is the customers don't care or customers don't know about the option. I hope this mean that the option is not going to be quietly dropped.

Good grief - is that the language Naim use to answer queries these days?

Boilerplate sincerity - in a coulis of stale corporate speak.

On the positive side, I did fill 2 lines on my buzzword bingo card.

No doubt it's the contracted-out Uniti support guys, rather than anyone employed by Naim at Salisbury. Anyway hopefully Trevor will think the same Adam!

this is bad. One of the reasons I bought Star was the promised DAB module. Yes, promised because before purchase I was asking directly Nam support about this. Oh well....

This is Naim's official blurb. We received the same words from the head office a few weeks ago...

Very bad indeed, Naim is no longer Naim

As for DAB, I'd rather prefer internetradio

Well I guess if it wasn’t made clear that the DAB module was only a possibility rather than a stated product option, in the UK at least, you will have right for a full refund if you bought the product on that basis. I know it doesn’t resolve the issue but it clearly allows you to peruse other options if you wish.

I must admit one one occasion I received a very what I would call Non Naim response, much like the OP but a different topic, almost Bot like.

I can understand Muso type products made elsewhere being supported as such, but I think it was mentioned anything below the Classic range is outsourced in terms of front line customer Bot support.

Some sort of reply via Richard or Trevor would hopefully put this thread to sleep or forever?

It's still listed as an optional availability TBA upgrade  on the website so presumably there are still plans for it.

The question is: how many years?

I was going to upgrade my Superuniti to a Nova but the lack of FM/DAB has put me off. Internet radio is superb sounding (radio 2 HD for example) FM and DAB is ok but not all stations are available on internet radio. It does seem short sighted.

I have never come across a radio station that I could not access to online. On the other hand, I have never come across a radio station I would want to access on DAB, the sound quality is just dreadful. What I’m really hoping for is a more widespread adoption of lossless FLAC streams, as Radio Paradise have done.

Not that my opinion is any more or less valid that yours, we all have our own take on these things.

I don't know what the current situation is here beyond what I previously posted a while back.  I think Trevor is currently away, so hopefully we will have some clarification for those who would like it when he's back.

Another unimpressed customer on this front. Delayed buying a Nova at launch as I smelled a rat with the FM/DAB module not being avaiable. I suspect it will never get launched now. Whilst I tend to use internet streams I wouldnt want to rely on them and so this becomes a must have item for an all-in-one. Disappointed.

I don't see a reason for DAB when they have full internet radio and you can stream from a phone or computer easily enough to get stations Naim does not cover. What radio station doesnt stream these days?

Perhaps they live somewhere that has Virgin Media as their ISP.

Ha ha.. close.. try being exchange connected in cnetral London! Dodgy internet aside, theres the continual gaps and time delay which if you using the radio to help time your day can be cataostrphic, and with over-the-air available for all so why add to energy use by streaming.

I completely get that. In truth VM isn't that bad, but when I'm stressed because my internet has stopped and I don't know whether it's a one minute restart of something they are doing (often the case) or the beginning of an intermittent service which takes weeks to get sorted (twice in the last 18 months), being able to rely on FM just being there is an important coping mechanism!

I have virgin media no issues.
