Not going to be DAB MODULE for the Uniti.

Posted by: Proterra on 17 July 2018

When I bought my Star I was told that there was going to be DAB module available late summer. Now like our government Naim have done a U turn, see email below,

Thank you for your email - at Naim, our mission is to provide customers with only the highest quality products with leading sound quality and features. On occasion is is necessary to de-prioritise features to balance resources, and with our current release schedule we have taken the decision to remove the FM/DAB module form the 2018 build plan.

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences caused and we would like to thank you for your cooperation and loyalty to Naim.

Don't get me wrong Internet radio is OK but I occasionally get drop outs. Whereas  I already have  DAB aerial on the roof that wouldn't give me that problem.

Some sort of reply via Richard or Trevor would hopefully put this thread to sleep or forever?

I don't know what the current situation is here beyond what I previously posted a while back.  I think Trevor is currently away, so hopefully we will have some clarification for those who would like it when he's back.

Thanks Richard that would be helpful for those that are waiting

Interesting that in What Hi-Fis review of the Star it says the FM/DAB module will be avaiable next year. Date wise this follows the news that it won't be out this year. If it is then great, if it is Naim kicking the can down the road before revealing the bad news then holy moly. Not sure how I feel about the new streamers getting the attention before the previous range launch is complete. Commerical pressures and reality no doubt. Russ

Good afternoon everyone,
I just thought I'd pick this up again to clarify that we (Naim) are still working on having DAB in Uniti models. However, as previously mentioned it won't be this side of Christmas. We realise that there is a demand for DAB radio and it is definitely in our plans to bring it to Uniti as soon as we can but there are other hurdles we need to overcome beforehand. Obviously, we will keep you all updated when we have more details.

Hi [@mention:76469591893271473], thanks for the update. Could you clarify whether or not there will also be an FM module, as the dinosaurs among us will want to know!?

Also, will this be available on all new Unitis, and new separate streamers, and will it be retro-fittable to existing units?

Sorry [@mention:36201736949470193] - the FM and DAB and parts of the same module, so yes there will be FM.

At the moment we are only planning for it on new Uniti models.

Thanks Matt

One big gap in internet radio is sports rights. BBC 5L doesn't carry live football commentaries, nor does BBC Radio Leicester [other BBC local radio stations are available, presumably]. Which puts those who live outside of the transmitter service area, and those within it who rely on this modern Naim gear for sports broadcasts, at a disadvantage.

It's not always about SQ; often - to coin a phrase - content is king.

It most certainly isn’t !

Not sure if the clarification clarified it all for me - can you (not you David, Matt or another Naim person) confirm or otherwise that the module will be retro fittable to those of us who ordered a Nova, etc with module, found it wasnt available  for ages and changed our order as the dealer (or Naim person on the Uniti road shows last year) said it would be ?

LinkedIn is your friend, in terms of telling you what is Matt's job at Naim, is what I meant, I thought obviously.

best

Wow, thanks to everyone who has been 'stalking me out' (to use a colloquialism), yes I am Content and Communications Officer here at Naim, so I write blog posts, email newsletters, some social media, press releases, some content for the brochures and assisting the marketing team.
But this isn't a forum about me...

Just my penneths worth,  I’m really surprised at the attitude of Naim here.

In my opinion, DAB/FM should have come as standard on ALL Uniti and other models in the current product range from the beginning and not an extra you have to pay for.

We all know current  DAB isn’t that great but if DAB+ comes along it might sound better?[another debate] but I have to say I listen mostly to web radio these days so I don’t listen to DAB except when my local BBC Radio station splits its frequencies so one might get on local team on DAB and the other on FM for example. This is very handy and I’ve used this service many times.  DAB would be handy if you suffer from many dropouts on the web as I’ve encountered when my internet was dead slow and I did use DAB often.  The fact is DAB is here to stay so Naim should have included it on their models as I stated earlier.

I’ve just got my hands on a preowned SU with DAB/FM onboard and I’m Radio happy.

Well Matt, maybe you can fix the website, which has shown a 552 instead of a 272 and 252 on the product pages for years. I told Naim when the mistake was first made, to no avail. It’s all in the knobs.

No it isn't Matt,

Although as this is work for you it might have been nice to have had a more formal introduction then perhaps some of us may not have had to resort to 'stalking me out' as you so nicely put it.
