NDS still faulty!

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 19 July 2018

My NDS dropped a channel last month after a few on off cycles when I was installing new Scap elsewhere in the chain, and also switching off to avoid lightning in the area. Off it went to Naim who apparently fixed some issues and tested it.

Except it is the same. The Left channel is running about 2% volume.

Now I am obviously going to ring service and get some ideas tomorrow but in the meantime all suggestions appreciated.

All other sources are fine. I have swapped the interconnect, no better and used my Qute into the Cd input of the pre-amp which works fine so it must be the NDS.

I have checked the app balance is not off centre. The only thing I cannot switch out is the 555PS as I don't have a spare or an XPS lying around. Note I only returned the  NDS and not the PS.

Can anyone suggest something I might try? Can someone explain to me how the power supply delivers to the NDS ie could a fault in the PS explain the issue? I am struggling to work out that it could be anything else, assuming Naim did do the repair correctly.

It would have been tested after service.  I think it's best to call Naim in the morning as maybe there's something up with the PS that's causing a problem.

Have you checked that Burndy Socket 1 from the PS goes to Burndy Socket 1 on the NDS and 2 goes to 2?

Thanks John. Nice try but I have checked it.

Naim as confused as me.

What is odd is that the dealer tested it when I sent it to them initially with their own 555PS and it had a muted channel, suggesting the NDS is the sole problem.

Anyway both going back to Naim now for them to puzzle over

One of the burndy cables to blame? What burndies were used to test things at the dealer and Naim? Different ones?

I did not send on my cables.

Pity a holiday in Salisbury could have relieved any stress they might have had,  my 500 ones came back nicely relaxed.

So if you and your dealer used your burndies, and had problems, but Naim didn’t , couldn’t that be a potential source of the issue?

Sorry, my post was unclear. The dealer and Naim used their own Burndys. Cannot be them as the dealer could reproduce the fault.

Let’s hope Naim can nail it down this time
