Whoops, I got it wrong.

Subject to a demo, the choice of amplification for my NDX 2, will be NAC 282 and NAP 250 DR. This has pushed my budget to the hilt, but I think it's worthwhile to avoid an attack of upgraditis in a years time. I received a bit of a bombshell today, when a dealer told me the amplification won't work unless the NAC 282 has a separate power supply (HiCap DR).

However, after quickly reading the NAC 282 manual, it states, "The NAC 282, NAC 202 and NAC 152 XS preamplifiers do not incorporate an internal power supply but must be used in conjunction with either a Naim power amplifier incorporating a preamplifier power output, or with an appropriate Naim power supply". It would appear that the NAP 250 DR does not have a preamp power out. I just assumed it would work with the NAP 250 DR...Wrong!

So it looks like I'm gonna have to do an extra paper round to pay for a HiCap DR?

Yup, looks like it.

Where's this place where a paper round will pay for a HiCap (are the papers there printed on gold leaf)?

And some moonlighting to pay for those new speaker cables.

Some of us are quite happy with 272/250 DR...much cheaper too

Depends on how set you are on the gold standard of NAC282 /HC-DR /NAP250DR but a NAP200DR might save on shoe leather and bicycle wear.

I really liked the simplicity of my 282/200.

Unfortunately I know me. If I go bronze, NAP 200/NAC 282, In a year, I'll be hankering after the NAP 250 DR

I do see where you're coming from though

If funds are challenged, get a second hand FlatCap. Not the the natural partner for a 282 but it is compatible and gets an unfair reputation. It is a decent power supply. Plus it can power both the standard PSU input on the 282 and the second upgrade PSU input (if desired). You can then relax and save up for the HiCap DR or even a SuperCap at your leisure.

The HiCap only powers a single output so if it is your desured PSU, just use the FlatCap with a single SNAIC cable to the 282. If the SuperCap is your goal, buy a second SNAIC and power both PSU inputs on the 282 so that you have all the cables needed when you get the SuperCap and are ready to go.

My old FC2X is still in service - powering a HeadLine, and helping either a NAT05XS or CD5X, now and then.

Very useful.

Feeling Zen makes a good suggestion about buying a secondhand Flatcap. But why not go further and buy the power amp secondhand? These are most often found in mint condition since they're just placed on a shelf, plugged in, powered on and not touched again. Doing so might enable you to buy a Supercap too (also s/h since they incur the same minimal handling as power amps). You could even buy these non-DR and have them upgraded at a later date when you get them serviced. Just a thought to make your money go further.

282/250 is a great combo. Hi Cap and Napsc is one of the reasons why 282 is great. Separate power supply is the key of this combination.  282/200 works as well but still share power supply.

Buy the 82/HC/250 second hand from a good dealer like Tomtom and you will be well within budget and no compromises.

A few years go I had a Flatcap on loan from my dealer to power my 282 when my SuperCap was being serviced and DR'ed. I was expecting a huge drop off in performance and so was very surprised at just how good the FlatCap was.  A real bargain in my view.

Plenty of used hicaps on the market

New 282 is way too expensive IMO

Selling at half retail after few years
