And it's off to service.

Posted by: RaceTripper on 20 July 2018

I just boxed up all my analog Naim gear, for recap and DR service: NAP250-2, NAC282 + NAPSC, and HiCap2. I'm told it will be 6-8 weeks +- before I see it all again.

When it comes back I might add a second HiCap DR (SuperCap DR is out of my range). Waste of money or good use of it? Just about all my listening is pure analog, acoustic music on vinyl: classical and jazz. I have a ND5-XS but rarely use it (maybe more in the future).

After that no more upgrades. I retire in about 5 years, and rather spend my money on records, cycling and travel.

You should post at AVS Dyn thread again. There are plenty of us there now that use Naim with our Dyns. Will be interested in how the DR upgrades work out for you.

Racetripper- how do you like your Herron phono? Any feedback very appreciated. Sorry for derailing the thread...

I participated in that thread for a very long time, but grew weary of all the bickering, and getting sucked into it. I left it years ago. How is it now? Any better?

The Herron is a pretty amazing piece of gear. It is very detailed/revealing, neutral and easily tailored using loading plugs and/or tube rolling. It's the finest phono stage I have ever used. The fit and finish is beautiful too.

The cool part is that Keith Herron (who lives and works a few miles from me) did the delivery to my house and setup personally , and stuck around for a few hours to listen to records with me. Good guy and very passionate about his craft.

Thanks for your insight Dean. I have heard many positive reviews of the Herron but never from a Naim user's point of view. I look forward to hearing one myself Thanks again..

Your system is going to sound better than new with all that work being done. Something to look forward to!

Second Hicap? If it were me I would enjoy having the kit back as is for a while and just enjoy it. When that itch comes get a dem of I Hicap, 2 Hicaps and then a Supercap and see what you think.

Thanks Stu. I hear what you are saying and agree in principal. However, it might be more strategic for me to go for a nice deal on a second-hand HC DR while I can. Thinking about it.

Still some bickering but nothing too bad. Most of it comes from cable debates. Lol I've seen your name mentioned there a few times so I'm sure you would be welcomed back there.

Yeah, I might poke in sometime. Part of it is time. I used to maintain the annual Formula 1 thread at AVS and gave that up too. I've been working hard so I can retire in a few years, and currently spend much/most of my free time cycling. I suppose once my Naim gear comes back and I stop being curious/questioning about the gear vs. just enjoying music, I'll disappear from all the audio forums once again. LOL

EDIT: I just looked in. I see that CD Lehner is still there. I thought he was banned. Anyway, he's the main reason I left. I doubt I'll post again as long as he is there.

I understand not having time for Internet forums. Sometimes I wish I didn't have as much time for them  lol

He pops in from time to time but not too often.

I talked to Keith Herron today. While my Naim gear is away for upgrades he is going to revise my VTPH-2 to VTPH-2a spec and retest everything. He's also going to check the Genelex Gold Lion tubes I've been using, as well as the tubes that came with it.

Looks like you have a terrific relationship with Mr Herron- priceless  Nice to know that you will be getting a finely tuned phono exactly tailored to your needs.....that almost never happens imo- consider yourself very lucky!

Yeah, no doubt. He's asking me to drop it off at his house after I return from my vacation in early August, and wants to hang out listening to some music. When he delivered it back in 2014, he spent hours at my place listening to my records. I turned him on to a few new things he really enjoyed, and gave him a couple jazz records I had spare copies of after upgrading to newer botique pressings. Keith is a good guy and enjoyable company for listening to good tunes.

Well, that was fast. I heard today that my Naim gear is done and on the way back. I should have it next week. Meanwhile, Keith Herron is finishing up the upgrades to my VTPH-2 (it will now be a VTPH-2a) and I'm picking it up at his house on Wednesday. I need to place an order with Acoustic Sounds for some new vinyl too. That should arrive just in time to enjoy the [like] new system. Might as well get a new belt for the turntable too.

NAP-250 is recapped and now a 250DR
HiCap is recapped and now a HiCap DR
282 is recapped
NapSC is recapped

It cost me a few grand, but should be worth it.

My Naim gear is in! Picking it up this afternoon. I get my phonostage back tomorrow. I ordered some new records from Acoustic Sounds to celebrate. My wallet is so light it defies gravity now.

May I ask if you sent it to Naim direct or via a dealer?

My dealer took care of everything. I dropped it all off in boxes about a month ago. I pick them up again this afternoon. Including shipping it cost me ~$3500.

I think you mentioned Audio Plus. Is that on NY? I think that is who repaired my Qute. Fairly quick turn around.

I was told the equipment went to Naim in Canada. There is some kind of relationship between the two.

Makes sense. The times I called all the names were French. Must have imported from NY. I never asked to be sure.

Yes I believe it all goes through Plurison, the North American supplier, located in Quebec I think.

Holy cow, this sounds great. I don't have my phonostage back yet, so I'm streaming some CD- and high-res audio from a NAS to the ND5-XS. I hear huge improvements so far across the spectrum. The bass has so much better grip/clarity, the midrange is warmer and more refined and the high end is much smoother, yet still very detailed. Everything is more forward and in the room. I look forward to playing some records tomorrow night. I have a record of Vivaldi's Gloria (Academo of Ancient Music) that serves as a test for sound staging. Can't wait to hear that again. I can't wait to see how it all improves with break in over the coming months.
